Guterres also addressed the critical issue of climate action, highlighting Africa’s abundant resources, such as solar and wind energy, as well as essential minerals needed for the clean energy transition. He noted that the demand for these minerals is expected to triple by 2030, presenting a unique opportunity for African nations to shift away from traditional resource exploitation. Instead, he advocated for high-value processing and production within the continent. Guterres emphasized the importance of international cooperation to ensure a just transition from fossil fuels, calling on developed nations to fulfill their commitments and increase adaptation financing. He stressed that Africa’s youthful workforce, combined with Europe’s capital and technological expertise, could lead to significant advancements in renewable energy.

The Secretary-General did not shy away from discussing the pressing issue of global peace, particularly in light of recent conflicts such as the Russian invasion of Ukraine and ongoing violence in regions like Gaza, Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Guterres reiterated the need for a robust multilateral approach to peace, advocating for permanent seats for African nations on the United Nations Security Council to rectify historical injustices. He called for sustainable funding for African Union-led peace operations, commending the European Union for its ongoing support in this area.
