Employee Relocates to Japan for Google Initiative, Exits Decade-Long Position
A former Google engineer has made headlines by leaving his decade-long career at the tech giant to pursue a new venture in Japan. Jad Tarifi, now the founder and CEO of Integral AI, shared his journey in an essay for Business Insider. He explained that his vision for developing robotics-driven artificial general intelligence (AGI) no longer aligned with Google’s advertising-focused priorities. Journey to Japan
In 2020, during his last year at Google, Tarifi successfully persuaded his manager to send him to Tokyo. This pivotal move not only marked a significant chapter in his career but also laid the groundwork for his future endeavors. While the United States is at the forefront of AI development, Tarifi noted that it has fallen behind in robotics due to the outsourcing of manufacturing. In contrast, Japan stands as the global leader in industrial robotics.
Tarifi emphasized that immersing himself in Japan’s ecosystem allowed him to merge the best aspects of AI from Silicon Valley with the advanced robotics capabilities found in Tokyo. He actively engaged with various stakeholders, including suppliers, manufacturers, and end customers, which deepened his understanding of how to design products for real-world applications. Additionally, he took on the challenge of learning Japanese, pushing himself into unfamiliar situations to enhance his language skills.
Establishing Integral AI
After leaving Google in 2021, Tarifi founded Integral AI, a startup focused on creating AI systems that can control robots and autonomous vehicles. However, starting a business in Japan has not been without its challenges. Tarifi faced bureaucratic hurdles, including rigid administrative rules and outdated paperwork systems. For instance, he required a personal “hanko” stamp for official documents, and the process of opening a business bank account took three months.
Despite these obstacles, Tarifi believes that the advantages of operating in Japan’s leading robotics market outweigh the difficulties. His experience in Japan has also transformed his approach to innovation. While the fast-paced culture of Silicon Valley often promotes a “move fast and break things” mentality, Tarifi found that Japan encourages a more systematic and iterative process. He described this approach as healthier and more sustainable for long-term innovation.
