Apple Set to Introduce MacBook Priced Lower Than iPhone
Apple is reportedly preparing to launch a budget-friendly MacBook that could be priced lower than an iPhone, marking a significant shift in its product strategy. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, this new laptop, codenamed J700, is designed to compete with affordable Chromebooks and Windows laptops. Currently in early production and testing, the device is expected to debut in the first half of 2026, targeting the budget and education markets rather than the traditional creative professional segment.
A MacBook under $1,000?
Bloomberg’s report indicates that Apple aims to price this new MacBook below $1,000, which is approximately ₹85,000. This pricing strategy would make it significantly more affordable than the existing MacBook Air lineup. To achieve this lower price point, Apple is likely to utilize less advanced components, including a standard LCD display and a slightly smaller screen compared to the 13.6-inch MacBook Air. Notably, this device may be powered by an iPhone processor instead of the company’s M-series chips, marking a first for the Mac lineup. Early internal tests suggest that this smartphone chip may outperform the M1 processor, which has been used in older MacBook models.
Designed for students and casual users
The upcoming affordable MacBook is expected to cater to students, small businesses, and casual users who primarily engage in web browsing, document editing, or media streaming. This model may also attract iPad users who prefer a traditional laptop experience with a keyboard and trackpad. By targeting this demographic, Apple aims to broaden its appeal and provide a more accessible entry point into the macOS ecosystem.
Rising competition from Chromebooks
This strategic move comes as Chromebooks continue to gain traction in the education sector, largely due to their competitive pricing and user-friendly software. Currently, Apple holds only 9% of the global PC market, trailing behind competitors like Lenovo, HP, and Dell. Introducing a sub-$1,000 MacBook could help Apple increase its market share, particularly in regions like the US and India, where the iPhone already enjoys a substantial user base.
What’s next for Mac
In addition to this budget-friendly MacBook, Apple is also developing next-generation M5-powered MacBook Air and Pro models, along with new Mac mini and Mac Studio systems. A revamped MacBook Pro featuring an OLED touchscreen and M6 chip is anticipated for late 2026 or early 2027. If these plans materialize, Apple’s first truly affordable MacBook could revolutionize access to the macOS ecosystem, especially for students and budget-conscious consumers.
