Digital Gold vs. Jewelry: Expert Insights on Costs, Safety, and Returns

As the festive season of Diwali and Dhanteras approaches, gold remains a favored investment choice in India, symbolizing both wealth and tradition. While many consumers traditionally purchase gold in the form of jewelry, coins, and bars, a growing trend is emerging with the rise of digital gold. This modern investment option offers convenience and systematic wealth accumulation, appealing particularly to younger, tech-savvy investors.

The Appeal of Digital Gold

Digital gold is gaining traction as it allows investors to benefit from rising gold prices without the need for physical storage. Unlike traditional gold jewelry, which incurs making charges, digital gold can be purchased online with investments starting as low as Rs 10. This accessibility makes it an attractive option for many. The gold is securely stored in vaults, minimizing risks associated with theft or damage. According to Trivesh D, COO of Tradejini, while digital gold may seem cheaper initially, additional costs such as platform spreads and GST can make it comparable to purchasing physical coins. However, he emphasizes that the real advantage lies in the convenience it offers. For serious investors, Gold ETFs are suggested as a more regulated alternative.

When to Choose Physical Gold

Despite the allure of digital gold, physical gold retains its charm, especially for larger investments. Prithviraj Kothari, Managing Director at RiddiSiddhi Bullions Ltd., notes that for investments exceeding Rs 2–3 lakh, physical gold, particularly coins or bars, may be more cost-effective. This is due to the cumulative costs associated with digital gold over time. Investors who prefer to have tangible assets may find physical gold more appealing, as it avoids prolonged storage fees that digital options may impose after five years. For smaller investments, however, digital gold remains a viable option due to its fractional buying capability and instant liquidity.

Liquidity and Security of Digital Gold

One of the standout features of digital gold is its unmatched liquidity. Investors can buy or sell their holdings 24/7 at market-linked rates through trusted applications. In contrast, physical gold often involves valuation deductions and purity checks, which can delay buybacks. The ability to instantly convert digital gold into cash or physical coins adds to its appeal, particularly among younger investors seeking flexibility. Additionally, digital gold is stored in insured, bank-grade vaults, reducing concerns about theft or damage. Trivesh highlights the importance of platform credibility, as reputable platforms utilize a custodian model to ensure ownership protection, even if the provider ceases operations.

Wealth Accumulation through Digital Gold SIPs

Digital gold also offers a systematic investment plan (SIP) option, allowing investors to accumulate wealth gradually. With the ability to start from as little as Rs 10, investors can set up automated purchase plans through fintech platforms. This method of consistent accumulation is becoming increasingly popular, especially as gold prices are expected to rise in the coming years. Aksha Kamboj, Vice President of the India Bullion & Jewellers Association, notes that digital gold SIPs are emerging as a smart long-term savings tool. Over a five- to ten-year horizon, both physical and digital gold tend to track similar price trajectories, but digital gold may provide better post-tax returns due to lower storage costs and the absence of making charges. As gold prices rise amid global uncertainties, systematic accumulation through digital platforms offers efficiency and tax parity while avoiding the costs associated with holding physical gold.
