Income Tax Department Clarifies Deadline for ITR Filing FY 2025-26

The Income Tax Department has firmly rejected rumors circulating on social media about an extension of the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) beyond September 15, 2025. In an official statement on X, the department clarified that the due date remains unchanged and urged taxpayers to rely solely on verified information from their official handle. As of now, over six crore ITRs have already been filed for the Assessment Year 2025-26, and the department is encouraging those who have yet to file to do so promptly to avoid penalties.
Clarification on Deadline Extension
The Income Tax Department took to social media to address misinformation regarding the ITR filing deadline. A post on X stated that false claims suggested the deadline had been pushed from September 15, 2025, to September 30, 2025. The department emphasized that the due date for filing ITRs remains September 15, 2025. This clarification comes in response to a surge of unverified messages that have been spreading online, potentially misleading taxpayers. The department has urged individuals to verify information through its official channels to avoid confusion and ensure compliance with tax regulations.
Support for Taxpayers
To assist taxpayers during this busy filing period, the Income Tax Department has made its helpdesk available around the clock. Taxpayers can access support through various channels, including phone calls, live chats, WebEx sessions, and updates on X. This initiative aims to facilitate the filing process and address any queries related to tax payments and ITR submissions. The department has expressed gratitude to taxpayers and tax professionals for their efforts, noting that over six crore ITRs have already been submitted for the current assessment year.
Filing Deadlines and Penalties
The original deadline for filing ITRs was July 31, 2025, but it was extended to September 15, 2025, due to necessary revisions in ITR forms earlier this year. These revisions required updates to filing utilities and backend systems, prompting the extension. While this extension applies to individuals, Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs), and non-audit entities, officials have indicated that a further extension is unlikely. Taxpayers who miss the September 15 deadline can still file a belated return until December 31, 2025, but this will incur late fees and interest liabilities as outlined in the Income Tax Act.
Trends in ITR Filings
The trend in ITR submissions has shown a steady increase in recent years. For the Assessment Year 2024-25, a record 7.28 crore returns were filed by the end of July 2024, marking a 7.5% increase from the previous year. As the final day for filing approaches, the Income Tax Department continues to encourage taxpayers to file early to avoid last-minute complications, penalties, and interest charges. The department’s message is clear: timely compliance is essential for a smooth tax filing experience.
