India Open to Importing GM Agricultural Products in US Trade Deal

India is currently engaged in negotiations with the United States regarding a significant trade deal, with discussions taking place in Washington, D.C. During the fifth round of talks, India expressed a willingness to import certain genetically modified (GM) agricultural products for animal feed. However, the country remains firm on maintaining restrictions on GM corn and soybean imports. As the negotiations progress, U.S. President Donald Trump has hinted at a trade arrangement that could involve tariffs similar to those imposed on Indonesia, potentially exceeding the standard rates.

Negotiations and Trade Dynamics

The ongoing trade negotiations between India and the United States are pivotal for both nations. India’s Commerce Ministry officials are actively participating in discussions aimed at finalizing a trade deal that could enhance economic ties. Reports indicate that India is open to importing specific genetically modified agricultural products, particularly those used in animal feed. However, the country is not inclined to lift its restrictions on GM corn and soybean imports, which reflects its cautious approach to agricultural biotechnology.

U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated that the trade arrangement with India may mirror the agreement with Indonesia, which includes a 19% tariff. This suggests that India could face tariff rates higher than the standard 10%. A senior official involved in the negotiations mentioned that an interim deal is expected to be reached before the upcoming Quad summit, which India will host. The Quad alliance includes the United States, Australia, and Japan, and Trump’s attendance at the summit underscores the importance of these negotiations.

Mutual Interests in Trade

Both India and the United States have specific goals in mind as they negotiate the trade deal. India is seeking to expand market opportunities in sectors that employ a significant workforce, such as textiles and electronics. On the other hand, the United States is advocating for substantial tariff reductions across various sectors, including automobiles, as well as access for its dairy and agricultural products.

The official involved in the negotiations stated, “We aim to package a deal before the Quad summit.” This highlights the urgency of reaching an agreement that could strengthen bilateral relations. Additionally, the United States has recently imposed tariffs on multiple countries, effective August 1, which may influence the dynamics of the negotiations. The U.S. has also engaged with Indonesia for substantial purchases, including energy resources and agricultural goods, indicating a broader strategy in its trade relations.

Potential Challenges Ahead

As the trade negotiations progress, several challenges may arise. The United States has expressed concerns regarding India’s continued procurement of Russian oil, particularly in light of recent geopolitical tensions. Trump has advocated for complete tariffs on nations purchasing Russian oil, which could impact India’s trade relations. NATO has cautioned India, China, and Brazil about potential secondary sanctions if they maintain trade ties with Russia without encouraging peace discussions.

Moreover, the U.S. has introduced a 10% tariff proposal affecting all BRICS exports, alongside a 50% duty on Brazilian goods. This could signal a shift in U.S. trade policy that may affect India as well. A trade expert based in New Delhi noted that even if a trade agreement is reached, it may not guarantee protection against future tariffs, given the unpredictable nature of U.S. policy.
