States Directed to Initiate Campaign for Fertilizer Quality Assurance

The Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmersโ Welfare in India has taken a decisive step to combat the growing problem of counterfeit and substandard fertilizers. In a recent communication to the Chief Ministers of all States and Union Territories, the Minister has called for immediate and stringent measures to address the sale of fake fertilizers, the black market for subsidized products, and illegal practices such as forced tagging. This initiative aims to safeguard the agricultural sector, which is vital to the nation’s economy, by ensuring farmers have access to quality fertilizers at reasonable prices.
Emphasis on Quality and Availability
In his letter, the Union Minister underscored the importance of agriculture as the backbone of India’s economy. He stressed that to stabilize farmers’ incomes, it is crucial to provide them with quality fertilizers in a timely manner and at affordable prices. The Minister pointed out that the sale of counterfeit or substandard fertilizers is illegal under the Fertilizer (Control) Order of 1985, which is part of the Essential Commodities Act of 1955. This legal framework is designed to protect farmers and ensure they receive the necessary inputs for successful farming.
Directions to State Governments
The Union Minister outlined several key directives for the States to follow. First, he emphasized the need for adequate availability of fertilizers at the right locations. States are urged to monitor and take swift action against black marketing, overpricing, and the diversion of subsidized fertilizers. Additionally, regular monitoring of fertilizer production and sales is essential, along with strict controls on counterfeit products through sampling and testing.
Another critical directive is to halt the forced tagging of nano-fertilizers or bio-stimulant products with conventional fertilizers. The Minister also called for strict legal actions against offenders, including the cancellation of licenses and the registration of First Information Reports (FIRs), to ensure effective prosecution and conviction.
Involvement of Farmers in Monitoring
The Minister has also directed States to develop feedback and information systems that involve farmers and farmer groups in the monitoring process. This initiative aims to educate farmers on how to identify genuine fertilizers versus counterfeit products. By empowering farmers with knowledge, the government hopes to create a more informed agricultural community that can better protect itself against fraudulent practices.
Statewide Campaign for Awareness
To further combat the issue of fake and substandard agricultural inputs, the Minister urged all States to launch a comprehensive statewide campaign. This campaign should align with the directives provided to eliminate the problem at its roots. Regular monitoring of these efforts at the State level is expected to lead to effective and sustainable solutions that prioritize the interests of farmers. By addressing these challenges head-on, the government aims to foster a healthier agricultural environment that supports the livelihoods of farmers across the country.
