Zee5 Collaborates with Amagi to Introduce Free Ad-Supported Streaming

Zee5 has announced a strategic partnership with Amagi Media Labs to introduce Free Ad-Supported Streaming Television (FAST) channels in India, set to launch in August. This initiative aims to provide viewers with free content supported by advertisements, expanding Zee5’s existing ad-free subscription model. As the FAST sector is projected to grow significantly over the next five years, Zee5 is positioning itself to enhance its presence in the rapidly evolving connected TV landscape.
Zee5 to Launch FAST Channels
Zee5 plans to leverage the technology of Amagi Media Labs to roll out its FAST channels in India this August. This new offering is designed to enhance Zee5’s Connected TV service, allowing users to access a diverse range of content, including movies and series across various genres such as comedy, drama, and horror. The company views this launch as a strategic move to solidify its foothold in the growing connected TV ecosystem. With the increasing popularity of streaming services, Zee5 aims to attract a broader audience by providing a traditional TV-like viewing experience, but with the flexibility of on-demand content.
What are FAST Channels?
FAST channels provide a unique viewing experience by offering free access to content supported by advertising revenue, similar to traditional television. Viewers can enjoy multiple TV channels without any subscription fees, as long as they are willing to watch advertisements. This model has gained traction recently, as more people opt for ad-supported services. Unlike traditional linear TV, which requires viewers to select specific programs, FAST channels allow users to choose from a variety of channels, enhancing the viewing experience.
According to Statista, the FAST channel service market is projected to reach approximately $194.71 million (around Rs. 1,671 crore) by 2025, with an annual growth rate of 12.67% anticipated from 2025 to 2030. In the United States, the market revenue for FAST channels is expected to reach about $5.78 billion (approximately Rs. 49,602 crore) by 2025. In India, the number of FAST subscribers is predicted to grow to around 154.3 million by 2030, indicating a ripe opportunity for Zee5’s entry into this burgeoning market.
Competitive Landscape
Zee5’s entry into the FAST channel service comes at a time when the market is poised for significant growth. However, it is not the only player in this space. Competitors such as The Roku Channel and Plex have already established a strong presence in the market. Plex, for instance, boasts over 25 million subscribers worldwide, although it does not disclose subscriber numbers by country. As Zee5 prepares to launch its FAST channels, it will need to navigate a competitive landscape while capitalizing on the increasing demand for ad-supported streaming options. The company’s timely entry into this sector could prove beneficial as it seeks to expand its audience and enhance its service offerings.
