Hundreds of followers have gathered in northern India to celebrate the 90th birthday of the Dalai Lama, the revered spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism. The Dalai Lama’s birthday celebrations commenced on Monday, coinciding with the Tibetan lunar calendar. The festivities will include the 15th Tibetan Religious Conference, which begins on Wednesday. More than 7,000 guests, including Indian ministers and notable figures like Hollywood actor Richard Gere, are expected to attend. The Dalai Lama has previously indicated that he would discuss his succession around this significant birthday. During a gathering, he mentioned a framework for discussing the continuation of the Dalai Lama institution, though he did not provide specific details. His past statements have varied, suggesting that his successor could be a girl or that there might be no successor at all. However, he has also indicated that if there is strong support among Tibetans in exile, the institution would continue.

Youdon Aukatsang, a member of the Tibetan parliament-in-exile, expressed that while many are eager for clarity regarding the Dalai Lama’s reincarnation, he does not expect a definitive procedure to be outlined this week. He emphasized the Dalai Lama’s role as a unifying force for the Tibetan movement and acknowledged concerns about the future leadership of the community. The Dalai Lama’s Legacy
The current Dalai Lama, born Lhamo Dhondub on July 6, 1935, was recognized as the reincarnation of his predecessor at the age of two. He was enthroned before turning four and educated in Buddhist philosophy. Following the 1959 Tibetan uprising, he fled to India, where he established a government-in-exile. Although he stepped back from political duties in 2011, he remains a spiritual leader for millions. He expressed a desire to visit Tibet, contingent on its freedom from Chinese rule.
