The Witcher 4 Aims for 60 FPS on Consoles, Excluding Series S

CD Projekt Red has ambitious plans for The Witcher 4, aiming for the game to run at 60 frames per second (fps) on current-generation consoles. However, the developer has cautioned that achieving this performance on the Xbox Series S may prove to be a significant challenge. This announcement follows the recent unveiling of a tech demo powered by Unreal Engine 5, which showcased the game’s technological foundation during the State of Unreal presentation. The demo, which was not actual gameplay, reportedly ran at 60fps with ray tracing enabled on a base PlayStation 5.
The Witcher 4 Performance Target on Consoles
In a recent interview with Digital Foundry, CD Projekt Red confirmed its goal of achieving 60fps on consoles for The Witcher 4. The studio emphasized that this target was set from the beginning of the demo’s development. Charles Tremblay, the vice president of technology at CDPR, acknowledged that while the ambition is high, there is still considerable work to be done. He noted that the tech demo does not include the complete gameplay loop, combat mechanics, or other essential features. Tremblay stated, โAt this stage, we’re perfectly aware that we still have a lot of work ahead of us. This is a tech demo. There is, you know, not the whole gameplay loop is implemented, there’s no combat, there’s a lot of things that don’t work.โ Despite these challenges, he expressed determination to achieve the 60fps goal, saying, โWe’ll work as hard as we can to make it for sure.โ
60 FPS on Series S
While CD Projekt Red aims for 60fps on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, the developer has indicated that achieving this frame rate on the Xbox Series S will be particularly difficult. Tremblay acknowledged the limitations of the Series S, stating, โThis is something on our radar for sure. But I will say that 60fps will definitely be extremely challenging on the Series S. Let’s just say that this is something we need to figure out.โ The Xbox Series S has presented challenges for various developers due to its lower memory and GPU capabilities compared to the Series X. Microsoft mandates that games must be released on both consoles simultaneously, which can complicate development.
The difficulties faced by developers on the Series S are not unique. For instance, the launch of Baldur’s Gate 3 on Xbox was delayed because the technical constraints of the Series S hindered the implementation of the game’s split-screen co-op feature. Ultimately, the game was released on current-generation Xbox consoles without this feature on the Series S, four months after its PC launch. Similarly, the developers of Black Myth Wukong cited optimization issues on the Series S as a reason for delays in their gameโs release.
Future of The Witcher 4
While the tech demo for The Witcher 4 showcased impressive performance at 60fps on a base PS5, it is important to note that this footage does not represent the final product. The actual game may not meet the targeted performance benchmarks upon release. CD Projekt Red has not yet announced a specific release date for The Witcher 4, but the studio has indicated that it will not be available before 2027. As the development progresses, fans of the franchise will be eagerly awaiting further updates on the game’s performance and features.
