Scene 2: Secrets and Separations

Aditi rushes into her college classroom, students waving as she passes. A colleague snaps, “Late again, Aditi!” She mutters, “I need to sign the register,” and hurries toward the principal’s office. At home, Rishi packs a suitcase. His mother, Tanushree, calls from the hallway: “Aditi’s parents arrive today!” Rishi zips his bag. “Tell them I’ll handle this later.” His father and uncle nod in support. “This case can’t wait,” Rishi says. Later, Aditi’s phone buzzes. Rishi’s voice crackles: “I’m handling an emergency.” Aditi crosses her arms. “You always say that!” She hangs up. Moments later, she texts him: What do I tell Arshi? Rishi replies, Please explain. Aditi types back: “I’m tired of your lies. Where are you going?” Rishi’s message: Simulbani. Secret mission. Aditi’s face pales. A memory flashes: Rishi once called Simulbani “a snake’s nest.” She types, Arshi will cut you off.

Rishi writes, Promise you won’t. Aditi hesitates, then replies, What if you fall for someone there? Rishi sends a heart emoji. “Signal’s bad there,” he says aloud. “But I’ll call.” He hugs his jacket to his chest. Meanwhile, Jhanak practices dance steps with the village women. “Too late!” she exclaims, wiping her brow. “I’m going home.” Nutan watches from a distance. Jhanak yells, “Don’t listen to Bua’s nonsense! I’ll take you to the mela tomorrow!” That night, Ishani scribbles in her journal. “I won the case, but Father died anyway,” she writes. “Now I’m married to a man with two kids. He’s kind, but…” She pauses, staring at a pot of detox water on the stove. Her husband enters, praising her adaptability. “You’ve learned fast,” he says. Ishani forces a smile.

Scene 3: The Road to Simulbani

Rishi’s motorcycle kicks up dust as he speeds toward Simulbani. He meets Krishnandu, his informant, under a flickering streetlamp. “Parashar’s here,” Krishnandu says. “He’s hiding in plain sight.” Jhanak pedals toward the mela, Nutan trailing behind. Suddenly, Rishi’s bike veers into her path. Jhanak’s bicycle wobbles. CRASH! She tumbles to the ground. Rishi skids, landing on his knees. “Are you blind?” he snaps. Jhanak glares, rubbing her elbow. “Can’t you drive?” She stomps off, muttering.

Back in the city, Aditi shows her parents a text from Rishi: Arrived safely. Arshi grumbles, “He’s chasing ghosts.” Aniruddh adds, “I’ve visited dozens of villages. Simulbani’s nothing special.” Aditi stares out the window. “Why do I feel connected to it?” Nutan tucks Jhanak into bed. “Parashar’s fighting for people like us,” she murmurs. “Study hard. Prove the villagers wrong.” Jhanak whispers, “I’ll make you proud.” As dawn breaks, Rishi snaps a photo of Jhanak’s retreating figure. Aditi stares at her silent phone. “Stay safe,” she murmurs.
