Mistral Launches Devstral, Open-Source AI for Coding Assistance

Mistral, a Paris-based artificial intelligence firm, has unveiled its latest innovation, Devstral, an open-source coding agent designed to tackle real-world software development challenges. Launched on Wednesday, this AI model distinguishes itself from existing software engineering agents by its ability to write contextualized code within a codebase. Mistral claims that Devstral achieved the highest score on the SWE-Verified benchmark during internal testing, showcasing its advanced capabilities. The development of this model was a collaborative effort with All Hands AI.

Mistral’s Devstral: A New Player in AI Coding

In a recent announcement, Mistral detailed the features and capabilities of Devstral, joining a competitive landscape of AI-powered coding agents. Major tech companies have recently introduced their own coding solutions, including OpenAI’s Codex, Microsoft’s GitHub Copilot, and Google’s public beta of Jules. Mistral aims to carve out its niche with Devstral, which is designed to address specific shortcomings in existing open-source large language models (LLMs).

While many current LLMs can perform isolated coding tasks, such as writing standalone functions or completing code snippets, they often struggle with contextual coding in larger codebases. This limitation can lead to difficulties in identifying relationships between various components and detecting subtle bugs. Mistral asserts that Devstral overcomes these challenges by contextualizing coding tasks within the database and existing frameworks, thus enhancing its practical application in software development.

Performance and Architecture of Devstral

Mistral’s internal testing revealed that Devstral scored an impressive 46.8 percent on the SWE-Verified benchmark, placing it at the forefront of AI coding agents. It outperformed several larger open-source models, including Qwen 3 and DeepSeek V3, as well as proprietary models like OpenAI’s GPT-4.1-mini and Anthropic’s Claude 3.5 Haiku.

The architecture of Devstral is based on the Mistral-Small-3.1 AI model, featuring a context window of up to 128,000 tokens. Unlike its predecessor, Devstral is a text-only model, lacking the vision encoder found in the Small-3.1 version. This model is equipped with tools that allow it to explore codebases, edit multiple files, and support other software engineering agents, making it a versatile addition to the coding landscape.

Accessibility and Deployment Options

Mistral emphasizes that Devstral is a lightweight model capable of running on a single Nvidia RTX 4090 GPU or a Mac with 32GB of RAM. This efficiency allows for local deployment, enabling users to run the model entirely on-device. Developers interested in utilizing Devstral can download it from platforms such as Hugging Face, Ollama, Kaggle, Unsloth, and LM Studio. It is available under a permissive Apache 2.0 license, which permits both academic and commercial use.

In addition to its standalone capabilities, Devstral can also function as an application programming interface (API). Mistral has listed the AI agent under the name devstral-small-2505, with pricing set at $0.1 (approximately Rs. 8.6) per million input tokens and $0.3 (approximately Rs. 25) per million output tokens. This pricing structure aims to make the technology accessible to a wide range of users, from individual developers to larger organizations.
