A Fishy Beginning
The story of teeth starts with odontodes, hard structures that first appeared on the armor of early fish. These ancient fish, dating back to the Cambrian period, used odontodes not for chewing but likely for sensing their environment. Researchers believe these structures helped fish detect predators and navigate their watery habitats.
The Quest for Knowledge
Yara Haridy, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Chicago, initially set out to uncover the oldest fossil of a vertebrate. While analyzing various specimens, she stumbled upon a fossil named Anatolepis. This fossil, previously thought to be the first known fish, revealed features that resembled sensory organs rather than teeth.
Sensory Superstars
Haridy’s research showed that the tubules in Anatolepis were similar to sensilla found in modern arthropods, like crabs and spiders. These sensilla are used to perceive temperature, vibrations, and even smells. The findings suggest that the sensory functions of these ancient structures have remained remarkably consistent over millions of years.
The Evolution of Teeth
As fish evolved, so did their teeth. Over time, jaws developed, and it became advantageous for fish to have pointy structures near their mouths. This gradual transformation led to the teeth we recognize today. Interestingly, the sensitivity of our teeth may be a remnant of their ancient purpose, helping our fishy ancestors survive in a challenging environment.
