OpenAI Launches Image Library for ChatGPT Users

OpenAI has unveiled a new image library feature for ChatGPT, allowing users to easily access all their AI-generated images in one convenient location. Announced on Wednesday, this feature is now available to all registered users, including those on free, Plus, and Pro plans. The library aims to enhance user experience by enabling seamless browsing, revisiting, and editing of images without the hassle of navigating through past conversations.

Streamlined Access to AI Creations

The new image library was introduced via a post on X (formerly Twitter) by OpenAI, highlighting its accessibility across various platforms, including the website, desktop applications, and mobile apps. Users can find the library by selecting the “Library” section on the left-hand sidebar. This feature is designed to showcase only images generated through the GPT-4o image generation capability, excluding legacy images produced by the DALL-E model, as noted in OpenAI’s support documentation.

With the library, users can easily manage their creations. At the bottom of the library interface, a โ€œMake Imageโ€ option allows users to quickly return to the chat interface for generating new images. By pressing and holding an image, users can enlarge it and open it in a new window, where they will find four new options: Edit, Select, Save, and Share. These functionalities enhance the overall user experience, making it easier to interact with their AI-generated content.

Enhanced Editing and Sharing Features

The editing capabilities within the library are particularly noteworthy. Users can select the โ€œEditโ€ option to open an image in a new chat window, allowing them to attach the image and add text prompts for larger edits or to create new images based on the original. The โ€œSelectโ€ tool enables inline edits, allowing users to highlight specific parts of an image for targeted modifications. A slider on the left side of the interface lets users adjust the size of their selection, while Undo and Redo buttons provide flexibility during the editing process. Additionally, a Copy option allows users to easily copy images to their device’s clipboard.

Sharing images is also straightforward. Users can download images directly to their devices or share them with friends and family through various social media platforms. This feature encourages collaboration and sharing of creative works, further enhancing the utility of the ChatGPT platform.

Limitations and Future Improvements

While the new image library offers numerous benefits, there are some limitations to note. Currently, users cannot delete individual images from the library. To remove an image, users must delete the entire conversation associated with it. This can be done on the web by hovering over the conversation title and selecting the Delete option from the menu. On mobile devices, users can press and hold the conversation title to access the Delete option.

As OpenAI continues to refine its offerings, users can expect further enhancements to the image library and other features. The introduction of this library marks a significant step in improving user interaction with AI-generated content, making it easier and more enjoyable to create and manage images.
