DoT and WhatsApp Unite Against Online Scams

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has joined forces with WhatsApp to expand the ‘Scam Se Bacho’ initiative, a campaign aimed at combating online scams and spam. This collaboration seeks to educate citizens on how to identify and report fraudulent communications, thereby enhancing digital safety and awareness across India. The partnership is part of a broader effort by DoT to prevent the misuse of telecom resources in cybercrime and financial fraud.
Empowering Citizens Through Technology
As part of this initiative, the DoT has launched the Sanchar Saathi portal and mobile app, designed to empower citizens to report suspicious calls and messages. The platform also allows users to manage their mobile connections and block or trace lost or stolen handsets. This citizen-centric approach is crucial in the fight against cybercrime, as it provides individuals with the tools they need to protect themselves. The Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP) of DoT collaborates with over 550 stakeholders, including banks and law enforcement agencies, to share information about the misuse of telecom resources and take necessary actions.
In addition to the technological advancements, the initiative will feature train-the-trainer workshops aimed at DoT officials, Sanchar Mitras, Telecom Service Providers (TSPs), and field units. These workshops will focus on enhancing the skills and knowledge of participants, enabling them to better educate the public about online safety. WhatsApp will also explore ways to integrate the Sanchar Saathi services into its platform, ensuring a wider reach and greater impact.
High-Level Discussions on Digital Safety
In a recent meeting, Joel Kaplan, Chief Global Affairs Officer at Meta, discussed the ongoing collaboration between DoT and Meta with Union Minister of Communication and Development of North East Region, Shri Jyotiraditya Scindia. The discussions highlighted the effectiveness of their partnership in addressing cyber threats and fraudulent communications. WhatsApp is actively working with the Digital Intelligence Unit of DoT, utilizing information from the DIP to take proactive measures against telecom misuse.
Minister Scindia emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating, “As India advances on its path of digital transformation, ensuring the safety and security of our citizens remains a top priority.” He noted that leveraging WhatsApp’s extensive digital reach will bolster efforts to create a secure digital ecosystem for all citizens.
Educational Resources for Enhanced Awareness
As part of the collaboration, WhatsApp will develop educational materials in conjunction with DoT to help users recognize and report online scams. These resources will cover various types of fraud, warning signs, and the reporting mechanisms available through the Sanchar Saathi platform. To ensure accessibility, all safety materials will be translated into multiple regional languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Gujarati.
The DoT remains committed to preventing the misuse of telecom resources by implementing advanced solutions and collaborating with various stakeholders. By raising awareness among citizens, the initiative aims to equip individuals with the knowledge necessary to navigate the evolving digital landscape safely.
