International Week of Science and Peace raises awareness about the significant role of science in society and the need to engage the wider public in debates on emerging scientific issues. It is observed between 7-13 November in 2022. International Week of Science and Peace”, takes place each year during the week in which 11 November falls.

It’s to encourage people to develop better technology and cultivate peace. Events and activities are planned for the whole week as a non-governmental initiative to encourage international participation. In every country, it’s also celebrated for maintaining and developing social and economic stability.

The theme of World Science Day for Peace and Development on 10 November 2022 is “Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development.

History of International Week of Science and Peace

In 1986, the first International Week of Science and Peace was observed. Seeing the success and impact of this event, the celebrations started taking place continuously through the organizers’ efforts. In December 1988, the UN General Assembly declared it an International Week of Science and Peace.

The UN General Assembly and intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations celebrate this week to promote science and technology, peace and safety. The event also encourages international co-operation amongst scientists.
