3rd CIL CSR Conclave 2024 kick starts at Kolkata

On December 15, 2024, Kolkata hosted the 3rd CIL CSR Conclave. The event was inaugurated by Dr. C.V. Ananda Bose, the Governor of West Bengal. Esteemed guests included Shri Vikram Dev Dutt, Secretary of the Ministry of Coal, and Shri P.M. Prasad, Chairman of Coal India Limited (CIL). The conclave aimed to highlight the importance of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives in transforming communities, especially in coal-bearing regions.

The Significance of CSR Initiatives

During the conclave, Dr. C.V. Ananda Bose emphasized the transformative power of CSR initiatives. He described the event as distinguished and purposeful. Dr. Bose pointed out that CSR efforts can significantly improve the lives of communities, particularly in tribal areas where coal is mined. He praised CIL for its commitment to funding cancer patient support initiatives. Such programs not only uplift local communities but also contribute to the overall development of the nation.

Dr. Bose’s remarks underscored the need for companies to engage in meaningful CSR activities. He believes that these initiatives should go beyond mere compliance with regulations. Instead, they should be viewed as a moral obligation to drive positive change in society. By investing in local communities, companies can create a lasting impact that benefits everyone involved.

Government Support for CSR Efforts

Shri Vikram Dev Dutt, Secretary of the Ministry of Coal, commended coal companies for their exceptional CSR efforts. He highlighted that projects launched in the last decade have significantly improved the lives of people in coal-bearing areas. Dutt stressed that CSR is not just a regulatory requirement but a moral responsibility. He urged companies to embrace CSR as a core value.

Dutt emphasized the importance of viewing local communities as equal stakeholders in coal companies’ activities. He encouraged companies to invest in education, healthcare, and infrastructure. By doing so, they can elevate their CSR initiatives to new heights. Dutt also proposed creating a theme-based calendar for the upcoming year, starting with education and expanding to other themes over time.

Focus on Womenโ€™s Empowerment and Start-ups

In his address, Shri Dutt encouraged coal subsidiaries to foster start-ups in coal-bearing regions. He highlighted the need for research and development in these areas. Dutt also stressed the importance of CSR projects that focus on women’s welfare and empowerment. By prioritizing these initiatives, companies can help create a more equitable society.

Shri P.M. Prasad, Chairman of CIL, reiterated the company’s commitment to CSR activities. He revealed that CIL has invested Rs. 5,570 crore in CSR projects over the past decade. These projects focus on critical areas such as education, healthcare, skill development, sports, and women’s empowerment. Prasad noted that CIL ranks among the top three Maharatna companies in terms of CSR expenditure.

A Path Forward

The 3rd CIL CSR Conclave 2024 served as a platform for discussing the vital role of CSR in community development. The insights shared by Dr. Bose, Shri Dutt, and Shri Prasad highlighted the importance of investing in local communities. As coal companies continue to embrace their moral responsibilities, they can create a positive impact that resonates far beyond their immediate operations. The commitment to CSR is not just about compliance; it is about building a better future for all.
