28 Major US Cities, Including NYC and Chicago, Facing Sinking Challenges

A recent satellite-based study has uncovered alarming ground subsidence trends in the 28 most populous cities across the United States, including major urban centers like New York City, Chicago, Dallas, and Denver. Researchers from Virginia Tech utilized high-resolution radar measurements to reveal that these cities are sinking at rates ranging from 2 to 10 millimeters (0.08 to 0.4 inches) annually. The findings indicate that over 20 percent of the land area in each city is experiencing subsidence, with 25 of the 28 cities showing more than 65 percent of their regions affected. This phenomenon poses significant long-term risks to urban infrastructure.

High Rates of Subsidence in Texas Cities

The study, published in the Nature Cities report on May 8, highlights Texas cities as the most severely impacted by subsidence. Houston stands out, with 40 percent of the city sinking at a rate exceeding 5 millimeters per year, and 12 percent of the area experiencing subsidence rates surpassing 10 millimeters annually. The research team, led by Leonard Ohenhen, attributes nearly 80 percent of the urban subsidence to excessive groundwater extraction, driven by the increasing demands of urban populations. While natural geological processes contribute to this issue, human activity has emerged as the primary cause of land depression in these urban areas.

Infrastructure at Risk

Experts have raised concerns about the implications of subsidence for urban infrastructure, warning that even minor shifts in the ground can compromise the structural integrity of roads, bridges, rail systems, and other critical facilities. Manoochehr Shirzaei, an associate professor at Virginia Tech, emphasized that this gradual hazard often goes unnoticed until it leads to significant disasters. The study also points out that both coastal and inland cities are vulnerable to the effects of subsidence, which can exacerbate flooding and complicate long-term urban planning efforts.

Recommendations for Mitigation

While completely preventing subsidence may not be feasible, the report advocates for enhanced monitoring and legal measures to address the issue. Key recommendations include improved satellite surveillance, better groundwater management practices, and the construction of resilient infrastructure. Experts warn that if left unaddressed, subsidence could evolve into a silent yet dangerous urban threat, necessitating immediate action to safeguard city environments and their inhabitants.
