World Peace and Understanding Day: History
The anniversary of the formation of Rotary International is celebrated on this day. On February 23, 1905, Illinois attorney Paul Harris organized a meeting with three friends in a Chicago downtown office building, where the Rotary Club was born. The Rotary Club was founded by Hiram Shorey, Gustavus Loehr, Silvester Schiele, and Gustavus Loehr because their meeting locations “rotate”. Friendly smiles and small-town values were represented by this professional group.
The National Association of Rotary Clubs in America was founded in 1910. In 1910, the Rotary Club of Winnipeg, Canada, was founded, and by 1922, Rotary clubs were located on six continents. World Peace and Understanding Day commemorates the founding of one of the world’s largest philanthropic organizations. In 1922, Rotary International became an official organization. The club was formed after the four men met other professionals worldwide who shared the club’s vision of global peace and humanitarian values.
The United Nations Charter was drafted with the help of 49 Rotarians, including the Rotary Club’s importance. Rotarians such as Paul Harris promoted the United Nations as a possible alternative to war. A well-paved highway leads to war, but the road to peace is still a wilderness, Harris said in 1949. The Rotarian Action Group for Peace was formed in 2012 to support Rotarian peacebuilders. Additionally, it aimed to strengthen Rotary International as a global peacebuilding network.
