Life and Career

He was born on 13 March 1900, in Urla, Aidin Vilayet, Ottoman Empire. Giorgos Seferis studied law and literature at the University of Athens, where he received his degree in 1924. After completing his undergraduate studies, he continued his education with postgraduate studies in Paris and London.

In Paris, he studied at the Sorbonne and attended courses in French literature and civilization. He also took courses in international law at the Institute of Political Studies. In London, he studied English literature at the University of London and attended lectures on history, philosophy, and art at the British Museum.

In the 1930s, he began to publish poetry, and his work was well-received by critics and readers alike. Seferis’s education in literature and languages played a significant role in his development as a poet and translator. He was fluent in Greek, French, English, and Italian, and he translated works by T.S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, W.B. Yeats, and other poets into Greek.

Some of his most famous works include “The King of Asine,” “Stratis the Sailor,” and “The Thrush.” His poetry has been translated into many languages and continues to be read and studied around the world.
