10.18 Crore Women Screened for Cervical Cancer Under Ayushman Arogya Mandirs and NHM

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has marked a significant achievement in women’s health by screening over 10.18 crore women aged 30 and above for cervical cancer across India. This initiative is part of a broader population-based program aimed at the prevention and management of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) under the National Health Mission (NHM). The screening efforts are primarily conducted through Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (AAMs), showcasing the government’s commitment to enhancing healthcare accessibility and awareness.
Targeted Screening Initiative
The cervical cancer screening initiative specifically targets women between the ages of 30 and 65. The primary method used for screening is Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA), which is performed at Sub-Health Centres and Primary Health Centres by trained health workers. Women who test positive through this method are referred to higher medical facilities for further diagnostic evaluation. This systematic approach aims to identify and manage potential cases of cervical cancer early, thereby improving health outcomes for women across the nation.
Role of Community Health Workers
At the grassroots level, Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) play a pivotal role in this initiative. They utilize Community Based Assessment Checklist (CBAC) forms to identify women at risk and encourage their participation in regular health check-ups and screenings at AAMs. ASHAs are also instrumental in raising awareness about the importance of early detection and promoting healthy lifestyle choices. Their efforts are crucial in ensuring that women understand the risks associated with cervical cancer and the benefits of timely screening.
Awareness Campaigns and Community Engagement
To bolster the preventive aspect of cancer control, the Ministry promotes wellness activities and targeted communication campaigns at the community level. Events such as National Cancer Awareness Day and World Cancer Day are regularly observed to engage the public. Additionally, various media platforms, including print, electronic, and social media, are utilized to maintain ongoing public engagement regarding NCDs, including cervical cancer. This multifaceted approach aims to create a well-informed community that prioritizes health and wellness.
Funding and Future Campaigns
Under the NHM, states and union territories receive dedicated funds for awareness generation activities based on their Programme Implementation Plans (PIPs). Furthermore, a time-bound NCD Screening Campaign was launched from February 20 to March 31, 2025, to accelerate screening efforts for individuals aged 30 and above. The success of this campaign has significantly contributed to the achievement of screening over 10.18 crore women, reflecting the government’s strong commitment to comprehensive healthcare delivery through Ayushman Arogya Mandirs. As of July 20, 2025, data from the National NCD Portal indicates that this initiative has successfully reached a substantial portion of the eligible female population.
