Sophie Rostopchine was born into an aristocratic Russian family. Her father, Fyodor Rostopchin, was a prominent diplomat and politician. In 1817, she married Eugène de Ségur, a French diplomat, and moved to Paris. Despite her Russian background, she became deeply immersed in French culture.
