Haktan Akdogan, a UFO researcher, observed the day for the first time in 2001. People gather together to search for extraterrestrial objects in the sky on this day.

To commemorate the supposed UFO crash in Roswell, New Mexico in 1947, July 2 is known as World UFO Day. Every year, thousands of researchers and paranormal enthusiasts gather in Roswell for the UFO festival.

History of World UFO Day

Roswell of 1947 may have been the first incident that led to conspiracy theories about aliens. There was actually a weather balloon crash near Roswell, Mexico, belonging to the US Security Forces.

Nine unusual objects were spotted in Washington, DC, on June 24, at the beginning of the 20th century.

Earlier, some people celebrated the day on June 24 while others observed it on July 2. Later, the day was officially recognized on July 2. The holiday was also celebrated on June 24 because nine unusual objects flew over Washington on that day in the early 1990s, according to aviator Kenneth Arnold.

According to aviator Kenneth Arnold, these flying objects looked “like a saucer” or “a large flat disk” that has come to be the associated image of an alien spacecraft.

World UFO Day Significance

The purpose of observing July 2 across the globe is to raise awareness about UFOs and to provide a moment to take a break from their busy schedules and look up in the sky for unidentified flying objects with the belief and conviction that UFOs exist and could pass by the Earth at any time. World UFO Day is also celebrated in some countries on June 24. It was first celebrated in 2001 by the World UFO Day Organisation.
