World Telecommunication and Information Society Day

World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) seeks to raise awareness of the opportunities that the Internet and other information and communication technologies (ICTs) can provide for economies and societies, as well as ways to bridge the digital divide. The 17th of May marks the anniversary of the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention and the creation of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The Day also highlights the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Communication is the act of interacting at a distance via wire, telegraph, or broadcasting. This is the transmission of signals, messages, writings, images, words, and sounds. The exchange of information between communication participants is impossible without technology.

History of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day

World Telecommunication Day is celebrated on 17 May every year since 1969, when the International Telecommunication Union was founded, and the first International Telegraph Convention was signed. In 1973, it was established as Resolution 46 by the Plenipotentiary Conference in Malaga-Torremolinos.  In November 2005, the World Summit on the Information Society requested the UN General Assembly proclaimed 17 May as World Information Society Day, highlighting the significance of ICT and the broad range of issues related to the Information Society raised by WSIS. In March 2006, the General Assembly adopted a resolution (A/RES/60/252) stating that World Information Society Day should be celebrated every 17 May.

In November 2006, the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference in Antalya, Turkey, decided to celebrate both events on 17 May as World Telecommunication and Information Society Day.
