World Milk Day

World Milk Day is celebrated every year on the 1st of June to raise awareness about the importance of milk in our diets. World Milk Day was established by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in recognition of the importance of milk as a food source all across the globe. World Milk Day has been observed on June 1 every year since 2001. During the event, activities that pertain to dairy are supposed to be highlighted as a means of bringing attention to them.

This year’s celebration began with the Enjoy Dairy Rally on May 29 – May 31 and ended with World Milk Day on June 1. The theme of this year’s conference focused on accelerating climate action and reducing dairy’s impact on the planet.

Theme of World Milk Day 2023

World Milk Day follows a campaign every year and does not follow a specific theme. The campaign for World Milk Day 2023 is “Showcasing how dairy is reducing its environmental footprint, while also providing nutritious foods and livelihoods.”

World Milk Day: History

World Milk Day was celebrated for the first time in 2001 and several countries participated. In 2001, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) proclaimed June 1st as World Milk Day in order to celebrate the contribution of the dairy sector to sustainability, economic development, livelihoods, and nutrition. The number of participating countries is increasing every year. On a national and international level, a variety of activities have been planned to commemorate this day. World Milk Day is observed to raise awareness of the nutrient value of milk and the necessity for its inclusion in the diet.

In addition to demonstrating milk is a global food, the fact that many countries choose to celebrate this on the same day emphasizes the importance of individual national celebrations.

World Milk Day: Significance

The main objective of World Milk Day is to make people aware of the importance of milk in a person’s life. The first food a child consumes after birth is perhaps the food they consume throughout their lives. As a matter of fact, it is the first food ingested by any living creature born in the world.
