World Metrology Day

World Metrology Day 2022 is celebrated every year on the 20th of May throughout the world.  The day is observed on the anniversary of the signing of the famous Metre Convention in Paris, France, back in 1875.

The term “Metrology” is used to describe the science of measuring things. There are a number of key elements found in metrology, including the definition of units of measurement, their realization in human practice, and traceability, that is, linking measurements made in practice to those made with reference standards.

Measurement plays a key role in scientific discovery and innovation, industrial manufacturing, and international trade, as well as in improving quality of life and protecting the environment.

History of World Metrology Day

It marks the anniversary of the signing of the meter convention in Paris, France on May 20, 1875. World Metrology Day is jointly organized by the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML) and Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM). These two organizations are in charge of ensuring the smooth running of global measurements.

In its framework, the Convention set the stage for global collaboration in the science of measurement and its industrial, commercial, and societal applications. The original aim of the Metre Convention is to make worldwide uniformity of measurement and it remains as relevant today as it was in 1875.
