Union Minister of Jal Shakti, Shri C.R. Paatil, will visit Odisha tomorrow to participate in activities related to the ongoing Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS) campaign. He will be joined by Odisha’s Chief Minister, Shri Mohan Charan Majhi, as they evaluate the state’s progress in sanitation, cleanliness, and waste management.
Focus of the Visit
The visit will start in Suando village, the birthplace of Utkalamani Pandit Gopabandhu Das, a social reformer from Odisha. The Union Minister will plant trees as part of the Ek Ped Ma Ke Naam initiative under the SHS campaign. Afterward, the dignitaries will visit the Utkalamani Memorial Museum and later travel to Bidyadharpur village to meet beneficiaries of the Individual Household Latrines (IHHL) programme. This will allow them to assess the sanitation improvements made under the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM-G).
Training and Awards for Village Committees
A special convention will be held at Biraramachandrapur GP for members of the Village Water and Sanitation Committee (VWSC). During this event, the VWSC Training Manual will be launched. There will also be demonstrations of water testing by women’s self-help groups (SHGs), followed by an award ceremony for the best-performing Gram Panchayats.
Review of Sanitation and Waste Management
During the visit, Shri Paatil will review the progress Odisha has made under SBM-G. Currently, 65.88% of villages have been declared ODF Plus Model villages, while 91.38% have established systems for greywater management. Additionally, 70.69% of villages have implemented solid waste management systems.
While the state has made considerable progress, efforts are being made to ensure all villages achieve ODF Plus Model verification by December 2024. The Minister will also focus on further initiatives like using plastic waste in road construction and involving SHGs in the operation and maintenance of sanitation assets.
Mass Participation and Public Engagement
This visit is happening during the ongoing Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS) 2024 campaign, which runs from September 17 to October 1. This campaign will culminate on Gandhi Jayanti, marking the 10th anniversary of the Swachh Bharat Mission.
Odisha has planned 25,376 events as part of the SHS campaign. The campaign includes activities like transforming 2,003 Cleanliness Target Units (CTUs) and organizing 314 Safai Mitra Suraksha Shivirs across rural areas. So far, 11,799 events have been completed, with 20.7 lakh people actively participating. This reflects Odisha’s dedication to involving local communities in keeping their surroundings clean and maintaining the success of the Swachh Bharat Mission.
Major Event for Sanitation Workers
On September 26, 2024, a significant Safai Mitra Suraksha Shivir will take place across 314 blocks in Odisha. This event aims to promote the safety and welfare of sanitation workers, recognizing their vital role in keeping the state clean and healthy.
Commitment to Clean India
The Union Minister’s visit to Odisha demonstrates the Government’s strong commitment to promoting cleanliness across rural India. The efforts made during this campaign contribute to the broader goal of ensuring a Sampoorna Swachh Bharat (Completely Clean India) and making it a lasting reality.
