Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar (24 April 1973) is an Indian former international cricketer.
He became the first cricketer to score 100 centuries in international play in 2012.
Early Life
Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar was born on 24 April 1973, in Maharashtra, India. He went to Sharadashram Vidyamandir High School, a school with a strong cricketing tradition. He was a star cricketer at his school.
He and his friend Vinod Kambli scored 664 runs in an inter school match against ‘St. Xavier’s High School’ in 1988.
Career
In 1989, he became India’s youngest Test (international) cricketer when he made his debut against Pakistan in Karachi. His first century came at the age of 18 in Australia (148 in Sydney, 114 in Perth), and 179 against the West Indies in 1994. In 1996, he became captain, but the team performed poorly, so he stepped down in 1997.
Tendulkar scored 523 runs during the 1996 World Cup, despite losing in the semifinals. As a result of his outstanding performance in the 1997-98 season, he won the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, the highest award given to an Indian athlete.
When India reached the finals of the 2003 Cricket World Cup, he scored 673 runs in 11 matches to lead India to victory. The team lost in the finals to Australia, but he was named ‘Man of the Tournament.’
After going through a rough patch, he regained his form in 2007, completing 11,000 test runs and becoming India’s top run scorer. He scored 493 runs in four tests in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2007-08.
He scored 482 runs, including two centuries, in the ‘World Cup’ in 2011. In the finals, India beat Sri Lanka-it was his first World Cup win.
He went through a lean period after the ‘World Cup.’ In November 2013, he retired from all forms of cricket, and his fans gave him an emotional send off.
He was named the 2015 ‘ICC Cricket World Cup’ ambassador. He was also named the ‘Team Icon’ for the popular ‘IPL’ team, the Mumbai Indians.
Awards and Achievements
In 2014, he became the first sportsman to receive the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award of India.
He was inducted into the International Cricket Council Hall of Fame in 2019.
In 1997, he won the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award.
He is one of the greatest cricketers of all time. He’s the only player to have scored 100 centuries and over 30,000 runs across all forms of international cricket.
In test cricket and one-day internationals, Tendulkar holds the record for most runs and centuries. In test cricket, he has 15,921 runs and 51 centuries. He has 18,426 runs and 49 centuries in ODIs.
He’s the first person to ever score two centuries in an ODI.
