Om Prakash Puri (8 October 1950 – 6 January 2017) was an Indian actor, who mainly appeared in Hindi Films.
EARLY LIFE
Om Prakash Puri was born on 8 October 1950, in Ambala, East Punjab, India. When he was six years old, his father who was a railway employee was put behind bars on allegations of theft of cement by these allegations his father lost his job and they become homeless. After this Puri’s brother, Ved Prakash Puri worked as a coolie, and Puri worked in a local tea shop to support his family.
While working, he continued his study, After his primary education. In 1973, he later earned a degree from the National School of Drama in New Delhi. He also studied at the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune, Maharashtra.
CAREER
He made his debut in the Marathi film “Ghashiram Kotwal”, which is the latest version of a Marathi play of the same name by Vijay Tendulkar. It was directed by K. Hariharan and Mani Kaul in cooperation with 16 graduates of the FTII.
He was best known for his famous films like ‘Aakrosh’, Arohan, and Ardh Satya and television films like Sadgati and Tamas, and light-hearted roles in Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro and Chachi 420.
He won his first Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award for the film ‘Aakrosh’ which was released in 1981.
AWARDS
In 1990, he was awarded Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian award in India. In 2004, he was made an honorary Officer of the Order of the British Empire.
He was also honored at the 89th Academy Awards in the Memoriam segment for his contribution to world cinema.
DEATH
He died on 6 January 2017 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, due to a heart attack.
