Constitution Day celebrations was organized by the Indian Parliamentary Group, in the Central Hall of Parliament House today (26 November 2021). The President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind, said that all members of parliament are defenders of the dignity of the Parliament.
Indian democracy’s apex is Parliament, the President said. Here all MPs meet to discuss issues about the public interest and to make laws. The elected representatives of the Gram Sabha, the Vidhan Sabha, and the Parliament should have just one priority. Their one priority is to work for the welfare of their constituents and for the nation’s interests. While there may be differences of opinion, it shouldn’t interfere with the real purpose of public service. Opposition and ruling party members will always compete. But this competition should be about being better representatives and doing better things for the public. Only then will it be healthy. Parliamentary competition should not appear like rivarly. We all believe our Parliament is a ‘Temple of Democracy.’ So, it’s everyone’s responsibility to conduct themselves in this temple of democracy with the same reverence they show in their temples.

According to him, the opposition is the most significant part of democracy. Without it, democracy would not work. Both the Government and the opposition, despite their differences, should work together for the long-term good of the country. That is what our constitution makers wanted, and it is also critical for nation-building.
He also spoke about digital version of the debates, calligraphed version of the Constitution and updated version of the Constitution as well.Through the digital version of the debates, not just our compatriots but the world, especially the young generation, would learn about the greatness and potential of our country and get advice for the future. People would get to see the finest examples of our art, culture, and ideals in the calligraphed version of the Constitution. Citizens, especially students, would be able to see how far our Constitution has progressed with the updated Constitution. It would be highly effective to conduct an online quiz on constitutional democracy. Such initiative will promote constitutional values among our citizens, particularly the young.
Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav
The President said we have just celebrated Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birthday. Now we are celebrating 75 years of independence. It is great to see people from all over the country taking part in ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav‘. The enthusiasm of ordinary citizens depicts deep respect for those freedom fighters. He said that commemorating such historic events is also a way to remind us of the values that our freedom fighters fought for. The preamble to our Constitution enshrines Justice, Liberty, Equality and Fraternity. In his speech, he urged everyone to follow our great national ideals every day. By following these ideals, we will further enhance our stature on the world stage.

26 November is Observed as Constitution Day of India also known as Constitution Day or Samvidhan Divas, to commemorate the adoption of the Constitution of India. On 26 November 1949, the Constituent Assembly of India adopted the Constitution of India and it came into effect on 26 January 1950.
