New Delhi, September 2024 – Union Minister for Rural Development and Agriculture, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, recently held a video conference meeting with Rural Development Ministers from various states. During the meeting, it was announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will release ₹2,745 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) on September 15, 2024, in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand. This release will benefit millions of people across the country.
At this event, acceptance letters will also be handed out to the beneficiaries of the PM Awas Yojana for the year 2024-25. Millions of people are expected to attend the event both in person and online, making it one of the largest events for rural development in the country.
PM Awas Yojana – Transforming Lives
Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan highlighted that this scheme is a key part of the Modi government’s vision to uplift the poor and rural communities. The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) aims to provide affordable housing for the rural poor, ensuring that every family has a roof over their heads. According to Shri Chouhan, the scheme has seen great success and is moving ahead at a rapid pace.
The target was to construct 2.95 crore houses by March 2024, and 2.65 crore houses have already been built. The government has expanded the scheme to construct 2 crore more houses in the next five years, with an estimated cost of over ₹3.06 lakh crore.
A Milestone Event
On September 15, during the event, 26 lakh families will celebrate Griha Pravesh (housewarming) as their houses are ready for occupation. Prime Minister Modi will also interact with some of the beneficiaries of the PMAY-G scheme during the event.
Shri Chouhan shared that the PM Awas Yojana is not just about building houses. The goal is to provide complete homes with all basic facilities. Families will benefit from government programs like the Swachh Bharat Mission for clean toilets, the Ujjwala Yojana for cooking gas, and the Saubhagya Yojana for electricity.
Simplifying the Process
To make sure that no deserving family is left out, the government has made the rules of the PMAY scheme simpler. Some exclusion rules like owning a motorbike, fishing boat, or a refrigerator no longer apply. The monthly income limit for eligibility has also been raised from ₹10,000 to ₹15,000. This makes it easier for more people to benefit from the scheme. The rule about land ownership has also been relaxed, ensuring that even families with small plots of land can apply.
Building Complete Homes
The government is committed to ensuring that the houses built under PMAY-G come with essential facilities. Each house includes:
- 90-95 days of wages under MGNREGA for building the house.
- Toilets, thanks to the Swachh Bharat Mission.
- Cooking gas under the Ujjwala Yojana.
- Electricity connections through the Saubhagya Yojana.
- Solar rooftop connections to reduce electricity bills under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar: Free Electricity Scheme.
Shri Chouhan emphasized that these efforts aim to create not just houses but well-equipped homes. The ultimate goal is to create poverty-free villages and support India’s development.
Continuous Support for Rural Development
Shri Chouhan assured that the Ministry of Rural Development is always available to provide assistance and solve any issues that might arise. He encouraged the states to work efficiently to meet the deadlines and ensure that every deserving family receives their house without delay.
With strong government support and continuous improvements in the scheme, PM Awas Yojana continues to be a cornerstone of rural development in India.
