Piyush Goyal’s Four-Day Visit to the United States Begins

On September 30, 2024, the Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal, started his four-day visit to the United States. The goal of this visit is to strengthen business and investment relationships between India and the US. Minister Goyal met with both existing and potential US investors, encouraging them to collaborate with India across various sectors.

Roundtable with Young Indian Entrepreneurs in New York

On the first day of his visit, Minister Goyal chaired a roundtable discussion in New York, where he met with young CEOs and entrepreneurs of Indian origin. This meeting was organized by the Consulate General of India. The young business leaders shared their thoughts about India’s business environment and offered suggestions on areas for improvement.

Minister Goyal highlighted the many reforms introduced under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. These reforms have been key to India’s rapid growth over the last decade. He also encouraged American companies to take advantage of India’s Make in India initiative. This initiative is focused on boosting high-tech manufacturing and quality production in the country.

One-on-One Meetings with CEOs

Throughout the day, Minister Goyal had one-on-one meetings with several prominent CEOs to discuss potential collaboration in industries such as advanced manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, robotics, artificial intelligence, and sustainable technologies.

Discussion with Amneal Pharmaceuticals

Minister Goyal met with Mr. Chintu Patel, Co-CEO, and Mr. Chirag Patel, President & Co-CEO of Amneal Pharmaceuticals. They explored ways to strengthen India’s pharmaceutical ecosystem. Topics included high-end research and development (R&D), biologics, and improving manufacturing capabilities. The goal is to create a strong global supply chain for pharmaceuticals.

Meeting with Henry R. Kravis of KKR

A productive discussion was also held with Mr. Henry R. Kravis, the Co-Founder and Co-Executive Chairman of Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. (KKR). Minister Goyal highlighted exciting investment opportunities in India, especially in sectors such as electronics manufacturing, data infrastructure, and logistics. He also spoke about India’s consistent economic growth over the last decade and the country’s vast consumer market, which offers numerous chances for strategic investments.

Blackstone CEO Stephen Schwarzman Talks Infrastructure

Minister Goyal met with Mr. Stephen Schwarzman, the CEO of Blackstone, a company that has already invested about USD 50 billion in India. Blackstone is one of the largest investors in India’s commercial real estate sector. The discussion focused on the potential for infrastructure development in India. Minister Goyal shared that the Indian Government is focused on building quality infrastructure to improve living standards, make it easier to do business, and reduce logistics costs.

Meeting with Warburg Pincus President Timothy F. Geithner

Later in the day, Minister Goyal met with Mr. Timothy F. Geithner, the President of Warburg Pincus. They had a one-on-one discussion about further improving the ease of doing business in India. Both agreed that there is a lot of potential for growth in this area, which will help attract more foreign investment.

Discussion with CNBC Global Reporter Seema Mody

Minister Goyal ended the day with a lively discussion with Ms. Seema Mody, a global market reporter from CNBC. They talked about the growing economic opportunities in India and the strong ties between India and the United States. Minister Goyal highlighted that these ties are essential for mutual growth and emphasized the importance of continued collaboration between the two countries.

A Strong Partnership Between India and the US

Minister Goyal’s visit highlights the deep economic partnership between India and the United States. The meetings on the first day of his visit focused on attracting investment to India’s growing economy and exploring new areas of business collaboration. Minister Goyal will continue his meetings with the business community in New York on Day 2 of his visit. After that, he will travel to Washington DC for bilateral meetings with key US government officials.
