New Delhi, September 2024: NITI Aayog recently hosted a national seminar on โSustainable Rural Livelihoods,โ chaired by Prof. Ramesh Chand, a member of NITI Aayog. The seminar brought together experts to discuss ways to improve livelihoods in rural India. The event focused on important issues like rural job creation, market connections, microfinance, entrepreneurship, and building a stronger rural economy.
The seminar was attended by policymakers, scholars, community leaders, and representatives from various ministries, international organizations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and startups. These groups came together to share ideas on how to create sustainable and inclusive growth in rural areas.
Agriculture and Rural Livelihoods
In his keynote speech, Prof. Ramesh Chand talked about the key role agriculture plays in supporting rural livelihoods. He explained how improving agricultural practices is crucial for the future of Indiaโs villages. Experts from different organizations, like the Ministry of Rural Development, Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences, and the Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS), also gave their thoughts.
The discussions stressed the need to close the gap between cities and villages. This means helping rural areas develop just as much as cities. Experts said that Indiaโs growth depends on the concept of SMART Villages, which aims to make villages self-reliant and innovative.
Rural Economy’s Contribution to Growth
During the seminarโs first session, participants highlighted the potential of the rural economy to contribute to Indiaโs GDP in the coming years. There were talks about improving rural infrastructure and creating strategies to achieve sustainable livelihoods. The focus was on new trends in the rural economy and how to create jobs in areas like the gig economy, green economy, construction, and services.
One key point was the need to empower rural communities by helping them connect to larger markets. The role of Gram Panchayats (village councils), women-led organizations, and local institutions was emphasized. These groups are important for making sure that rural progress is driven by the people living in the villages.
Building Resilience in Rural Areas
The second session of the seminar focused on how to create sustainable livelihoods in the face of climate change. Experts from organizations like the National Academy of Agricultural Research Management (NAARM), Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), and the Central Water Commission (CWC) shared their research on agriculture and water security. They talked about the need for a comprehensive groundwater law and new models for agriculture that can help rural communities become more resilient.
They also suggested that new ideas in rural entrepreneurship could help improve livelihoods. By using innovative methods, rural areas can adapt to challenges like changing weather patterns and limited water resources. This will make sure that rural India continues to thrive, even in difficult times.
Supporting Sustainable Growth
The seminar emphasized that sustainable livelihoods in rural areas are key to Indiaโs overall development. It is not just about providing jobs, but also about creating lasting opportunities for growth. The idea of inclusive economic growth means that everyone, especially in rural areas, can benefit from Indiaโs progress.
By promoting financial inclusion, supporting rural businesses, and connecting farmers and producers to bigger markets, India can ensure that its rural economy grows along with its cities. Experts agreed that a strong rural economy is the foundation for a Viksit Bharat (Developed India).
