10th National Handloom Day Celebration
On August 7, 2024, India celebrated the 10th National Handloom Day. The event raised awareness about the importance of the handloom industry in India’s economy. Vice-President Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar presented the Sant Kabir Handloom Awards and National Handloom Awards to talented weavers.
Various activities took place across the country to promote handlooms. These included a Special Sourcing Show in Varanasi, a “Know Your Weaves” event at the Crafts Museum, and exhibitions at Handloom Haat and Dilli Haat. Students, artisans, and government officials participated, spreading the message of India’s rich handloom heritage.
Skilling Programme in 100 Handloom & Handicrafts Clusters
On July 27, 2024, the Ministry of Textiles launched the ‘Bunkar and Karigar Utthan Upskilling Programme.’ This initiative aims to improve the skills of artisans and handloom weavers. So far, 3,600 artisans have benefited from this program. Participants received certificates and toolkits to help them improve their craft and compete better in the market.
Shilp Didi Mahotsav 2024
The ‘Shilp Didi Mahotsav 2024,’ held on August 22, 2024, supported 100 women artisans from 72 districts. This event, held at Dilli Haat, gave these artisans marketing opportunities to sell their products. This initiative has empowered women and promoted entrepreneurship among Indian artisans.
Textile Gallery Inauguration at Crafts Museum
On August 8, 2024, Union Minister of Textiles Shri Giriraj Singh inaugurated a new Textile Gallery at the Crafts Museum. This gallery features 150 handmade items showcasing India’s rich textile heritage. Around 28,000 artifacts from different regions of India are displayed, highlighting the country’s vibrant culture.
Eri Sericulture Promotional Project in Gujarat
On August 9, 2024, the Ministry launched the Eri Sericulture Promotional Project to help 500 castor farmers in Gujarat adopt Eri culture. This project is part of the government’s push for sustainable agriculture, and it provides farmers with additional income opportunities. So far, 100 farmers have been trained in Eri culture.
Startups in Technical Textiles
On September 6, 2024, the Ministry approved 12 startup proposals under the GREAT initiative. These startups are working in fields like medical textiles, smart textiles, and sustainable textiles. Each startup receives up to ₹50 lakhs in support. This initiative promotes innovation and job creation in India’s technical textiles sector.
New Pricing Methodology for Jute Sacking Bags
On August 28, 2024, the government introduced a new pricing method for jute sacking bags. This decision helps jute mills and benefits 4 lakh jute mill workers and 40 lakh farmer families in India, particularly in West Bengal. It also promotes the use of biodegradable jute products, aligning with the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
VisioNxt Fashion Trend Insight and Forecasting System
On September 5, 2024, the Ministry launched VisioNxt, a fashion trend forecasting system that uses Artificial Intelligence (AI). This tool helps weavers, startups, and retailers predict fashion trends, making it easier for them to succeed in the market. The system includes a web portal and a bilingual Fashion Trend Book available in Hindi and English.
Bharat Tex 2025 Curtain Raiser
On September 4, 2024, the Ministry unveiled Bharat Tex 2025, a global textile event. This event, scheduled for 2025, aims to promote India as a leading destination for textile sourcing and investment. More than 5,000 exhibitors and 6,000 international buyers from 110 countries are expected to attend, making it one of the largest textile shows in the world.
International Conference on Technical Textiles
From September 6-7, 2024, the Ministry hosted an international conference on technical textiles. Industry leaders, researchers, and government officials came together to discuss the future of technical textiles in India. The conference focused on promoting indigenous products and developing new markets, both domestically and internationally.
