India is set to host its first-ever “Future Warfare” course for officers from the Army, Navy, and Air Force. This course, scheduled from September 23 to 27, 2024, will take place in New Delhi under the leadership of the Chief of Defence Staff, General Anil Chauhan. It is a unique and important step toward preparing the Indian military for modern warfare.
Understanding Modern Warfare
The course is designed for officers from the ranks of Major Generals to Majors, along with their equivalents in other services. Its main goal is to teach them about the key operational and technological aspects of warfare in the future. In today’s world, wars are no longer just physical or “contact” conflicts. They can also be “non-contact,” involving strategies like cyber attacks, space warfare, and psychological operations.
New Technologies in Warfare
Modern wars will be influenced by advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), robotics, and hypersonic weapons. The course will explain how these disruptive technologies could change the way battles are fought. Officers will learn about both kinetic (physical) and non-kinetic (digital or information-based) strategies, giving them a better understanding of how wars will be fought in different domains like space, cyberspace, and even the electromagnetic spectrum.
Why This Course is Important
As technology evolves, the way wars are fought also changes. The Future Warfare course will help officers keep up with these changes and develop the skills they need to handle new challenges. This training is critical because modern conflicts are no longer just fought on the ground; they can happen in cyberspace or through information warfare.
By attending this course, officers will also learn the importance of working together across different services to create a stronger, united military. The goal is to build a future-ready force that can adapt to any situation and protect India’s national interests in a world that is constantly changing.
Course Designed by Experts
The course has been carefully designed by experts from the Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff, including both serving and veteran officers. This first course will be short, but future editions will be longer, focusing on creating a tech-savvy and modern Indian Armed Forces that can deal with future challenges.
