India’s coal production and supply from April to August 2024 have shown positive growth, although heavy rains in August caused a temporary slowdown. The Ministry of Coal remains focused on ensuring that the country’s energy needs are met through reliable coal production.
Coal Production from April to August 2024
Between April and August 2024, India produced 384.07 million tonnes (MT) of coal, which is a 6.36% increase from the 361.11 MT produced during the same period in 2023. This shows a steady rise in coal production, despite the weather challenges in August.
However, in August 2024, coal production slightly dipped to 62.67 MT, a 7.51% decrease from 67.76 MT in August 2023. The reason for this drop was the heavy rains, which affected mining and transportation.
Coal Supply Across India
During the same April-August period, the total coal supply across India reached 412.69 MT, a 5.17% growth compared to 392.40 MT supplied during the same period in 2023. However, like production, August 2024 saw a small decline in supply. The supply in August dropped to 69.94 MT, a 6.98% decrease from 75.19 MT in August 2023.
Focus on Power Sector Supply
Coal supply to India’s power sector is critical to keep the country’s energy grid running smoothly. From April to August 2024, coal supplied to power plants was 338.75 MT, a 4.13% increase from 325.33 MT during the same period in 2023. In August 2024, however, the supply to the power sector fell slightly to 58.07 MT, down 5.47% from 61.43 MT in August 2023.
Increased Coal Stock at Power Plants
Despite the minor dip in production and supply in August, India’s coal stock at thermal power plants grew significantly. As of 31st August 2024, coal stock at power plants reached 37.18 MT, a 32.08% increase from 28.15 MT recorded on the same day in 2023.
Ensuring a Stable Supply
These trends show the Ministry of Coal’s strong commitment to keeping coal production and supply stable, even when faced with challenges like bad weather. The government is working hard to ensure the power sector has enough coal to meet the country’s energy demands, so there are no disruptions in electricity.
In summary, while August 2024 saw a temporary decline due to heavy rains, the overall performance of India’s coal sector remains strong, and the country is on track to meet its energy needs.
