India Approves New Defense Purchases Worth ₹1.44 Lakh Crore

On September 3, 2024, the Defense Acquisition Council (DAC), led by Defense Minister Shri Rajnath Singh, approved new defense purchases worth ₹1,44,716 crore. Almost all of these purchases will be made from Indian companies, showing a strong push for using locally made equipment.

One of the major decisions was to upgrade the Indian Army’s tank fleet by approving the purchase of Future Ready Combat Vehicles (FRCVs). These advanced tanks will have better mobility, protection, precise firepower, and real-time awareness to handle any situation on the battlefield.

The DAC also approved the purchase of Air Defense Fire Control Radars. These radars will help detect and track enemy aircraft and provide accurate firing solutions. Another approved proposal was for Forward Repair Team (Tracked) vehicles. These vehicles are designed by Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited and will be used to repair equipment during military operations.

In addition, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) will get new equipment to enhance its capabilities. The DAC approved the purchase of Dornier-228 aircraft and Next Generation Fast Patrol Vessels, which can operate in rough weather. They also approved Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels, which have advanced technology for long-range missions. These upgrades will help the ICG with surveillance, patrolling, search and rescue, and disaster relief.

During the meeting, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh paid tribute to the late Indian Coast Guard Director General (DG) Rakesh Pal, who was also a member of the DAC. DG Rakesh Pal passed away on August 18, 2024, due to a heart attack. Shri Rajnath Singh praised DG Pal’s contributions to the Indian Coast Guard and offered condolences to his family. The DAC members honored his memory by observing a moment of silence.

These new defense purchases will strengthen India’s military capabilities and boost the country’s defense industry.
