Important Days and Dates in September 2022

Every month has numerous important dates for the observance and enhancing awareness for the betterment of the community as a whole. These observations are aimed to educate the public on issues of concern, mobilize political will and resources to address global problems and celebrate and reinforce the achievements of humanity.

1 September – National Nutrition Week

National Nutrition Week is celebrated for approximately a week, from the 1st to the 7th of September. The day is crucial as it raises knowledge about the value of food and the effect of nourishment on the body of a human

2 September – World Coconut Day

World Coconut Day is recognized on September 2 every year. The main objective is to increase awareness of the value of coconut fruit.

3 September – Skyscraper Day

September 3 is selected as Skyscraper Day. Skyscrapers are incredibly tall structures that represent the skyline of a city.

5 September – Teachers’ Day

India commemorates the birth anniversary of Dr Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan on September 5, who was India’s second President.

5 September – International Day of Charity

International Day of Charity is observed on 5 September to promote notions of volunteerism and philanthropy. The International Day of Charity was established with the objective of sensitizing and mobilizing people, NGOs, and stakeholders all around the world to help others through volunteer and philanthropic activities.

7 September – International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies

International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies is observed every year on 7 September. Encouraged by the increasing interest of the international community in clean air, and emphasizing the need to make further efforts to improve air quality, including reducing air pollution, to protect human health, the General Assembly decided to designate 7 September as the International Day of Clean Air for blue skies.

8 September – International Literacy Day

International Literacy Day is an international observance, celebrated each year on 8 September, that was declared by UNESCO on 26 October 1966 at the 14th session of UNESCO’s General Conference. It was celebrated for the first time in 1967. Its aim is to highlight the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies.

9 September – International Day to Protect Education from Attack

International Day to Protect Education from Attack is observed every year on 9 September. The International Day to Protect Education from Attack is an international observance established by a unanimous decision of the United Nations General Assembly in 2020.

10 September – World Suicide Prevention Day

World Suicide Prevention Day is observed every year on 10 September. World Suicide Prevention Day is an awareness day observed on 10 September every year, in order to provide worldwide commitment and action to prevent suicides, with various activities around the world since 2003.

12 September – United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation

United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation is observed every year on 12 September.

14 September – Hindi Diwas

Hindi Day is celebrated in India to commemorate the date 14 September 1949 on which a compromise was reached—during the drafting of the Constitution of India—on the languages that were to have official status in the Republic of India.

15 September – International Day of Democracy

In 2007 the United Nations General Assembly resolved to observe 15 September as the International Day of Democracy—with the purpose of promoting and upholding the principles of democracy—and invited all member states and organizations to commemorate the day in an appropriate manner that contributes to raising public awareness.

15 September – National Engineers’ Day

National Engineer’s Day is observed every year on September 15. The day is celebrated on the birth anniversary of engineer statesman Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, a diwan of the former Mysore kingdom who is credited with pioneering engineering achievements.

16 September – International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer

World Ozone Day is observed on September 16 every year to spread awareness among people about the depletion of the Ozone Layer and find possible solutions to preserve it. On this day, people from all over the world hold talks and seminars on the ozone layer.  Educators teach students about the benefits of the Ozone layer and special events and activities are organised to spread awareness.

17 September – World Patient Safety Day

World Patient Safety Day (WPSD), observed annually on 17 September, aims to raise global awareness about patient safety and call for solidarity and united action by all countries and international partners to reduce patient harm. Patient safety focuses on preventing and reducing risks, errors and harm that happen to patients during the provision of health care.

18 September – International Equal Pay Day

International Pay Day occurs on September 18 every year. The Equal Pay International Coalition began this holiday in 2019 to raise awareness about this persistent issue. Their goal is to end pay gap discrimination.

19 September – International Pirate Day

International Talk Like a Pirate Day is a parodic holiday created in 1995 by John Baur and Mark Summers, of Albany, Oregon, U.S., who proclaimed 19 September each year as the day when everyone in the world should talk like a pirate. An observer of this holiday would greet friends not with “Hello, everyone!” but with “Ahoy, maties!” or “Ahoy, me hearties!” The holiday, and its observance, springs from a romanticized view of the Golden Age of Piracy.

21 September – International Day of Peace

The International Day of Peace, sometimes officially known as World Peace Day, is a United Nations-sanctioned holiday observed annually on 21 September.

23 September – International Day of Sign Languages

International Day of Sign Languages is celebrated annually across the world on 23 September every year along with International Week of the Deaf. The choice of 23 September is the same date that the World Federation of the Deaf was established in 1951.

25 September – Antyodaya Diwas

Antyodaya Diwas is observed every year on September 25. This day was given its national importance when Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in 2014, dedicated it in honour of late Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya to mark his birth anniversary. 

26 September – International Day for the Total Elimination of nuclear weapons

International Day for the Total Elimination of nuclear weapons is observed every year on 26 September.

27 September – World Tourism Day

Since 1980, the United Nations World Tourism Organization has celebrated World Tourism Day as international observance on September 27. This date was chosen as on that day in 1970, the Statutes of the UNWTO were adopted. The adoption of these Statutes is considered a milestone in global tourism.

28 September – International Day for Universal Access to Information

The International Day for Universal Access to Information was proclaimed on 15 October 2019 at the 74th UN General Assembly to be held on 28 September. Initially, the day was designated by the UNESCO General Conference. It was inaugurated in November 2015 and was first held on 28 September 2016.

29 September – International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste

September 29 is the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, an opportunity to raise awareness of practices and innovations to reduce food loss and waste and build a more resilient food system.

29 September – World Maritime Day

World Maritime Day is observed every year on the last Thursday of every September. In 2022, an observation will be made on 29 September. The World Maritime theme for 2022 – ‘New technologies for greener shipping’  reflects the need to support a green transition of the maritime sector into a sustainable future, while leaving no one behind. The theme provides an opportunity to focus on the importance of a sustainable maritime sector and the need to build back better and greener in a post-pandemic world.

30 September – International Translation Day

International Translation Day is an international day recognising translation professionals. It is on 30 September, which is the day of the feast of St. Jerome, the Bible translator who is considered the patron saint of translators.
