Important Days and Dates in August 2022  

Every month has numerous important dates for the observance and enhancing awareness for the betterment of the community as a whole. These observations are aimed to educate the public on issues of concern, mobilize political will and resources to address global problems and celebrate and reinforce the achievements of humanity.

1 August – World Breastfeeding Week

World Breastfeeding Week raises awareness about breastfeeding. It is observed between 1-7 August.   It commemorates the Innocenti Declaration by WHO and UNICEF in August 1990 to protect, promote and support breastfeeding.

1 August – World Wide Web Day

World Wide Web Day is celebrated annually on every August 1. The commemoration aims to remember Sir Tim Berners-Lee for conceptualising WWW or the World Wide Web in Geneva in the year 1989. After more than a year of research, his publicity was finally completed and accessed on 23 August 1991.

1 August – Yorkshire Day

Yorkshire Day is a yearly celebration on 1 August to promote the historic county of Yorkshire, England. It was celebrated by the Yorkshire Ridings Society in 1975, initially in Beverley, as “a protest movement against the local government re-organisation of 1974”

3 August – National Watermelon Day

National Watermelon Day is observed every year in the US on 3 August. It aims to recognise the refreshing summertime treat enjoyed at picnics and fairs!  And since watermelon is 92% water, it is very satisfying in the summer heat.

4 August – National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day

National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day is observed every year on 4 August.

5 August – Blogger Day

Blogger Day is observed annually on 5 August. Blogger was launched on the 23rd of August, in 1999, by Pyra Labs. it is one of the earliest tools that was dedicated purely to publishing blogs. A lot of people credit Blogger with helping to popularize the blog format. A few years later, in 2003, Google purchased Blogger under terms that have not been disclosed. One of the most significant changes in this switch was that Google made the premium features of Blogger free of charge. Google then purchased Picasa a year later, in 2004, and made a move to integrate Picasa into Blogger. The significance of this was that it gave Blogger users the ability to post photos to their blogs.

6 August – Hiroshima Day

Hiroshima Day is observed on August 6 every year to mark the anniversary of the atomic bombing on two cities of Japan –Hiroshima and Nagasaki — during World War 2. The nuclear bomb blasts killed nearly 80,000 people while more than 35,000 were injured.

7 August – National Handloom Day

National Handloom Day is observed annually on 7 August. In 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared August 7 as National Handloom Day. Today marks the seventh year that the country will celebrate National Handloom Day. Not only does the day celebrate India’s rich handloom heritage but also commemorates a significant historical event.

8 August – Quit India Movement Anniversary

On 8th August 1942, Mahatma Gandhi launched the Quit India Movement for freedom from British rule in Mumbai (then Bombay). The Quit India Movement, also known as the August Movement, was a movement launched at the Bombay session of the All-India Congress Committee by Mahatma Gandhi on 8 August 1942, during World War II, demanding an end to British rule in India.

9 August – International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples

International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples is observed every year on 9 August. Indigenous women are the backbone of indigenous peoples’ communities and play a crucial role in the preservation and transmission of traditional ancestral knowledge. They have an integral collective and community role as carers of natural resources and keepers of scientific knowledge. Many indigenous women are also taking the lead in the defence of indigenous peoples’ lands and territories and advocating for indigenous peoples’ collective rights worldwide.

However, despite the crucial role indigenous women play in their communities as breadwinners, caretakers, knowledge keepers, leaders and human rights defenders, they often suffer from intersecting levels of discrimination on the basis of gender, class, ethnicity and socioeconomic status.

9 August – Singapore National Day

National Day of Singapore is celebrated every year on August 9, in commemoration of Singapore’s independence from Malaysia in 1965.

9 August – Nagasaki Day

Nagasaki Day is observed every year on August 9 to promote peace politics and raise awareness of the effects of the bomb attack on Nagasaki. Nagasaki city was attacked by atomic weapons that killed thousands of lives instantly. It is the 77th anniversary of the atomic bombing of the Japanese city.

Vlogging Day is observed every year on 10 August

10 August – World Lion Day

World Lion Day is celebrated on August 10 of every year to raise awareness about lions and to mobilise support for their protection and conservation. According to the Worldwide Fund for animals (WWF), even though a lion is often referred to as the “king of the jungle,” it actually only lives in grasslands and plains.

11 August – Mountain Day

Mountain Day takes place annually on 11 August and reminds us to see mountains as natural sanctuaries of peace. Mountain Day encourages everyone, especially those who are boxed into the flatlands of dense, urban centres; to use the day exploring nature and taking in wondrous views while breathing deeply of fresh, mountain air. Pondering the blessings that mountains offer is reflective of Shintoism, the dominant religious practice in Japan.

Also, International Mountain Day is observed every year on 11 December. As the name suggests, the day is observed to encourage the suitability of habitats in mountainous regions. Further, it highlights the importance of sustainable development of in mountains. The Day is observed from 2003 onwards.

12 August – International Youth Day

International Youth Day is observed every year on 12 August. It is an awareness day designated by the United Nations. The purpose of the day is to draw attention to a given set of cultural and legal issues surrounding youth. The first IYD was observed on 12 August 2000.

 12 August – World Sanskrit Day

World Sanskrit Day celebrates the Sanskrit language and helps it get recognition globally. This day is celebrated every year on Poornima of Shravana month, which also marks the holy festival of Raksha Bandhan. In 1969, the Government of India decided to celebrate Sanskrit Diwas on Raksha Bandhan Day to enlighten new generations about the ancient Indian language.

This year, World Sanskrit Day will be observed on 12 August.

12 August – Raksha Bandhan

Rakshabandhan is a popular, traditionally Hindu, annual rite, or ceremony, which is central to a festival of the same name celebrated in South Asia, and in other parts of the world significantly influenced by Hindu culture. On this day, sisters of all ages tie a talisman, or amulet, called the rakhi, around the wrists of their brothers, symbolically protecting them, the festival of Raksha Bandhan is observed with great pomp and show among the members of the Hindu community, especially in India. Also known as Rakhi or Raksha Bandhan, the festival is quite similar in its essence and sentiment to Bhai Dooj except that on Raksha Bandhan, the ceremonial Rakhi is tied to the siblings’ wrists.

This year, Raksha Bandhan will be observed on 11 August.

 12 August – World Elephant Day

 World Elephant Day is an international annual event on August 12, dedicated to the preservation and protection of the world’s elephants.

 13 August – Organ Donation Day

Organ Donation Day is celebrated every year on 13 August in India and various countries of the world. To understand the importance of organ donation in a person’s life as well as to encourage the common man to donate organs, this day is celebrated every year by the government organization and people related to other businesses.

 13 August – National Bowling Day

The second Saturday in August is National Bowling Day, a holiday to commemorate one of America’s classic sports.

 13 August – International Lefthanders Day

International Left-Handers Day is an international day observed annually on August 13 to celebrate the uniqueness and differences of left-handed individuals. The day was first observed in 1976 by Dean R. Campbell, founder of Lefthanders International, Inc.

 14 August – Independence Day of Pakistan

 Independence Day, observed annually on 14 August, is a national holiday in Pakistan. It commemorates the day when Pakistan achieved independence and was declared a sovereign state following the end of the British Raj in 1947.

 15 August – Independence Day in India

 Independence Day is celebrated annually on 15 August as a national holiday in India commemorating the nation’s independence from the United Kingdom on 15 August 1947. This year India is observing 75 Independence Day. Also, India is observing Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.

 16 August – National Roller Coaster Day

 National Roller Coaster Day is observed every year on 16 August.

 17 August – Indonesia Independence Day

 The Independence Day of Indonesia is a national holiday in Indonesia commemorating the anniversary of Indonesia’s proclamation of independence on the 17 August 1945. It was made a national holiday by government decree in 1946.

 18 August – Indonesia Constitution Day

 Constitution Day in Indonesia is observed on August 18 every year. The constitution was established in 1945 at a meeting of the Preparatory Committee for Indonesian Independence, in order to ensure unity after the declaration of independence of the Republic of Indonesia on August 17, 1945.

 18 August – Janmashtami

Krishna Janmashtami, also known simply as Janmashtami or Gokulashtami, is an annual Hindu festival that celebrates the birth of Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu. According to the Hindu lunisolar calendar, it is observed on the eighth tithi of the Krishna Paksha in Bhadrapada Masa.

This year, Janmashtami will be observed on 18 August 2022.

 19 August – World Humanitarian Day

 World Humanitarian Day is observed annually on 19 August. It is an international day dedicated to recognizing humanitarian personnel and those who have lost their lives working for humanitarian causes.

 19 August – World Photography Day

World Photography Day is celebrated annually on August 19 and has photography enthusiasts come together across the world to celebrate the art of taking photographs. The origin of the day can be traced back to 1837 in France.

 20 August – World Mosquito Day

 World Mosquito Day, observed annually on 20 August, is a commemoration of British doctor Sir Ronald Ross’s discovery in 1897 that female anopheline mosquitoes transmit malaria to humans.

 20 August – Sadbhavana Diwas

Sadbhavana Diwas is observed nationwide every year on 20 August. The theme of Sadbhavana is to promote National Integration and Communal Harmony among people of all religions, languages and regions. The idea behind the observance of Sadbhavana Diwas is to eschew violence and promote goodwill among the people.

The observation is to commemorate the Birth Anniversary of Late Shri. Rajiv Gandhi, former Prime Minister of India, promoted National Integration and Communal Harmony amongst people of all religions, languages and regions to eschew violence and promote goodwill among the people.

21 August – International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism

 The International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2017. It designated 21 August as the International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism in order to honour the victims and survivors of terrorism.

 22 August – International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief

 International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief is a United Nations-sponsored annual awareness day that takes place on August 22 as part of the UN’s efforts to support Human Rights Related to Freedom of Religion or Belief. It was first introduced in 2019.

 23 August – International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and Its Abolition

The International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition is an international day celebrated annually on 23 August, the day designated by UNESCO to memorialize the transatlantic slave trade.

24 August – International Strange Music Day

International Strange Music Day is observed annually on 24 August.

24 August – Ukraine Independence Day

Independence Day of Ukraine is the main state holiday in modern Ukraine, celebrated on 24 August in commemoration of the Declaration of Independence of 1991.

 25 August – Be Kind to Humankind Week

Be Kind to Humankind Week is an annual worldwide celebration of kindness that is observed from 25 August – 31 August. This week is a time for us to reflect on what we can do to make this world a better place.

26 August – Women’s Equality Day

Women’s Equality Day is celebrated in the United States on August 26 to commemorate the 1920 adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which prohibits the states and the federal government from denying the right to vote to citizens of the United States on the basis of sex.

 26 August – International Dog Day

International Dog Day or National Dog Day (more commonly used term) are celebrated on August 26 every year.

27 August – National Petroleum Day

At the end of the summer, Americans celebrate National Petroleum Day. This is a great day to take a cruise in a car and enjoy the progress and also the things that the petroleum industry gives us. Petroleum was discovered by Edwin L. Drake on 27 August 1858, in Titusville, Pennsylvania. He struck oil 70 feet beneath the surface in Titusville, thus launching the modern-day petroleum industry in the USA. This event is very important for the history of Titusville because since the discovery of crude oil the region became prosperous.

 28 August – Emirati Women’s Day

 Emirati Women’s Day is commemorated every year on August 28. The Emirati Women’s Day was founded in 2015 by Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, also known as The Mother of the Nation. The General Women’s Union of the United Arab Emirates was founded on this day and this unique holiday is observed to recognize Emirati women’s efforts and to honour their devotion, fortitude, dreams, and accomplishments in shaping the United Arab Emirates. It honours all of U.A.E. women’s accomplishments over the last 50 years, as well as their ambitions for the future.

29 August – International Day against Nuclear Tests

The International Day against Nuclear Tests is observed on August 29. It was established on December 2, 2009, at the 64th session of the United Nations General Assembly by the resolution 64/35, which was adopted unanimously.

29 August – National Sports Day or Rashtriya Khel Divas

The National Sports Day is celebrated on Dhyan Chand’s birthday on 29 August to honour the hockey legend.

29 August – Telugu Language Day

 Telugu Language Day is observed on 29 August each year in the State of Andhra Pradesh of the Republic of India. This date was chosen to coincide with the birthday of the Telugu poet Gidugu Venkata Ramamurthy.

 30 August – International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances

International Day of the Disappeared is held annually on the 30 of August and gives the chance for us to recognise the numbers of people missing through conflict, disaster and migration and to show solidarity to their loved ones.

 30 August – Small Industry Day

The National Small Industry Day is an annual celebration observed on 30 August. It is dedicated to promoting small businesses nationwide and offering job opportunities to the unemployed.

31 August – International Day for People of African Descent

 International Day for People of African Descent is observed on August 31 each year. This holiday was created by the United Nations to celebrate the diverse heritage and several contributions of people of African descent.

 The International Day for People of African Descent was celebrated for the first time on 31 August 2021. Through this Observance, the United Nations aims to promote the extraordinary contributions of the African diaspora around the world and to eliminate all forms of discrimination against people of African descent.

 31 August – Malaysia National Day

 Independence Day is the official Independence Day of Malaysia. It commemorates the Malayan Declaration of Independence of 31 August 1957. Malaysia became independent from the British in 1957. The day is marked by official and unofficial ceremonies and observances. The day celebration is also called Merdeka, Hari Kebangsaan, National Day.
