ICGEB Celebrates World Biofuel Day 2024: Advancing Biofuels and Carbon Capture for a Sustainable Future

World Biofuel Day 2024

The International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) marked World Biofuel Day 2024 with a significant event at its New Delhi campus, highlighting the strides made in biofuels and carbon capture technologies. The gathering served as a platform for students, researchers, and industry experts to delve into the emergence and opportunities presented by advanced biofuels, which are crucial to achieving global and national Net Zero CO2 emission targets.

A keynote address by Shri Ramakrishna YB, Former Chairperson of the Working Group on Biofuels under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoP&NG), and a current member expert in the same working group, was the highlight of the event. His talk, titled “Emerging Policy Ecosystem in India for Advanced Biofuels and Opportunities Towards Achieving Net Zero by 2070,” provided an insightful overview of India’s policy framework and the future potential of the biofuels sector.

In his speech, Shri Ramakrishna YB emphasized the vast potential of the biofuel sector, which he described as having the capacity to surpass the agricultural sector in scale. He stressed the need for extensive research and development to overcome existing technical and economic challenges, thus unlocking the vast opportunities for sustainable energy production that biofuels offer.

The event also saw the release of two short films produced by ICGEB. The first, titled “Building a Greener Future: The Carbon Quest,” showcased cutting-edge research in carbon capture, a technology critical for achieving a sustainable future. The second film, “Building a Greener Future: Biomass to Biofuels,” highlighted ICGEB’s innovative work in transforming biomass into biofuels, a key area of research aimed at reducing carbon emissions.

Students from three premier colleges of Delhi University and two Kendriya Vidyalaya schools attended the event, gaining a unique opportunity to interact with leading scientists at ICGEB. These interactions were designed to inspire and educate the next generation of scientists about ongoing research in biofuels and carbon capture.

The students also participated in live demonstrations from various ICGEB labs, where they witnessed the practical aspects of biofuel production and carbon capture technologies. These hands-on experiences provided a deeper understanding of the scientific processes involved in these critical research areas.

ICGEB’s celebration of World Biofuel Day 2024 was a testament to its commitment to advancing cutting-edge research while also engaging and inspiring young minds in the pursuit of a sustainable and green future.
