Buddha Jayanti

Buddha Jayanti, also known as Buddha Purnima, is a Buddhist festival celebrated in most of East Asia and South Asia commemorating the birth of Prince Siddhartha Gautama, who was the founder of Buddhism. According to Buddhist tradition, Gautama Buddha was born around the year 563-483 BCE in Lumbini, Nepal.

History of Buddha Jayanti

In India, Gautama Buddha was a spiritual teacher. Many scholars are uncertain as to when he lived. Buddha is believed to have been born between the sixth and fourth centuries BCE. Scholars are generally split between those who place Buddha’s death about 480 BCE and those who place it as much as a century later.

During and after his lifetime, Buddha was an influential spiritual teacher. Many Buddhists regard him as the Supreme Buddha. Festivals were held to honor Buddha for centuries. During the first meeting of the World Fellowship of Buddhists, it was decided to celebrate Vesak as the Buddha’s birthday. In May 1950, this conference was held in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The date was fixed to coincide with the full moon that month.

During years when there are two full moons in May, different Buddhist communities may celebrate Vesak on different dates. This is because the Buddhist lunar calendar is interpreted differently.
