Babasaheb Bhosale, (15 January 1921-6 October 2007) was an Indian freedom fighter and politician.
Early Life
Babasaheb Bhosale was born on 15 January 1921 in Maharashtra, India. After graduating from Shahaji Law College in Kolhapur, he passed his bar-at-law examination at Lincoln’s Inn in London in 1951, then practiced as a lawyer in Satara for ten years. He was imprisoned in 1941-42 for his involvement in the freedom struggle. He moved to Mumbai with his 5 kids, worked at the high court and held a few notable political offices during his career.
Bhosale lost in 1978 to the Congress Party candidate from the Kurla assembly seat of Nehru Nagar. A member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly in his first term, he was elected to the Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha in 1980, then a minister, and then a chief minister. He headed the law and judiciary departments in the A R Antulay ministry before becoming Maharashtra’s chief minister.
Chief Minister of Maharastra
In 1982, he was appointed as Chief Minister of Maharastra by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. While he was only Chief Minister for 377 days, he made some bold decisions during his tenure. Some of these things were free education for girls up to matriculation, Gadchiroli district creation, and inauguration of a Bombay High Court bench in Aurangabad. Apart from starting a pension scheme for freedom fighters, Bhosale dissolved the policemen’s union with Congress’ backing.
He was also involved in dissensions within the Congress party and allegations of corruption involving liquor distilling licenses and Mumbai apartments while he was Chief Minister.
On 1 February 1983, Vasantrao Patil became chief minister after Bhosale’s rule was overthrown.
There are some people who served in Bhosale’s cabinet who went on to hold important positions after him, like Pratibha Patil, who became India’s president, and Vilasrao Deshmukh, who became Maharashtra’s chief minister.
Death
He died on 6 October 2007, Mumbai, Maharashtra, India.
