Birth Anniversary

6 May in Indian history is celebrated as the birth anniversary of the following personalities:

Motilal Nehru (6 May 1861 – 6 February 1931), an Indian lawyer, activist, and politician belonging to the Indian National Congress. He was the father of first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru. He also became the President of Congress twice in between 1919–1920 and 1928–1929. Nehru was born on 6 May 1861 in Allahabad, North-Western Provinces, British India (present-day Uttar Pradesh, India).

Suresh Kumar Khanna, an Indian politician and a member of the 10th to 17th  Legislative Assembly of Uttar Pradesh in India. He belongs to Bharatiya Janta Party political party. He represents the Shahjahanpur constituency of Uttar Pradesh. Currently, he is the Cabinet Minister for Finance, Parliamentary affairs, and Medical Education Departments in the Yogi Adityanath’s ministry. He was born on 6 May 1953 in Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India.

Sujata Bhatt, an Indian poet, and native speaker of Gujarati. She was born on 6 May 1956 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

Sanjay Mitra, a former Defence Secretary of India, and before this, also served as Union Road Transport and Highways Secretary and the Chief Secretary of West Bengal. He is a retired 1982 batch Indian Administrative Service officer of West Bengal cadre. After retiring from the IAS, Mitra became a professor of practice at the School of Public Policy at the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. He was born on 6 May 1959 in Delhi, India.

Vindu Dara Singh, an Indian film and television actor, made his acting debut in the 1994 Hindi film Karan. He acted in many films and television shows such as JAY VEER HANUMAN (1996) in which he played the role of Lord Hanuman, Zaal in Ssshhhh…Koi Hai (2003) and Char Sau Chalis in Karma (2004). He also made his appearance in television shows like Master Chef 2, Comedy Circus, and Dara is a winner of the third season of Bigg Boss. He was born on 6 May 1964 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India.

Laxmi Ratan Shukla, a former Indian cricketer, and politician. He is a right-handed middle-order batsman and a right-arm medium-pace bowler. He represented the Bengal cricket team.[2] He also played in the IPL for the team Kolkata Knight Riders, Delhi Daredevils, and the Sunrisers Hyderabad. He was a member of the legislative assembly of West Bengal representing the All India Trinamool Congress. Shukla resigned from the ministry on 5th January 2021. He was born on 6 May 1981 in Howrah, West Bengal, India.

Gagan Narang, an Indian shooter, is supported by the Olympic Gold Quest. He was the first Indian to qualify for the London Olympics. He won the Bronze Medal in the Men’s 10 m Air Rifle Event at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Narang has also won the Padma Shree Award in 2011 and the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award for 2010. He was born on 6 May 1983 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

Death Anniversary  

6 May in Indian history is observed as the death anniversary of the following personalities:

Shahu (26 June 1874 – 6 May 1922), Raja of  Bhonsle dynasty of Marathas (1894 – 1900), and the first Maharaja (1900–1922) of the Indian princely state of Kolhapur. He mainly worked for the cause of the lower caste subjects in his state and Primary education to all regardless of caste. He died on 6 May 1922 at the age of 47 in Bombay.

Bhulabhai Desai (13 October 1877 – 6 May 1946), a prominent parliamentary leader of India and an associate of Mahatma Gandhi. He was an Indian independence activist and acclaimed lawyer. Desai died on 6 May 1946.

Subba Rao(15 July 1902 – 6 May 1976), the ninth Chief Justice of India(1966–1967). He also served as the Chief Justice of the Andhra Pradesh High Court. He died on 6 May 1976 at the age of 73.

Shanta Kalidas Gandhi (20 December 1917 – 6 May 2002), an Indian theatre director, dancer, and playwright. She also got the Padma Shri award in 1984 and being made chairperson of the National School of Drama (1982–84) in the Indra Gandhi administration. She died on 6 May 2002.

6 May 1529 – The Battle of Ghaghra was a major battle for the conquest of India by the Mughal Empire. It is fought between Babur and the Eastern Afghan Confederates under Sultan Mahmud Lodi and Sultanate of Bengal under Sultan Nusrat Shah, which results in Mughal victory. After that Bihar was annexed by the Mughal Empire including surrounding territories and a Peace settlement with the Sultanate of Bengal.

6 May 1857The British East India Company disbands the 34th Regiment of Bengal Native Infantry at Barrackpore.

6 May 1871 – Victor Grignard, a French chemist, and Nobel Prize Laureate, was born.

6 May 1889 – Eiffel Tower in Paris, France was officially opened for the general public to visit there.

6 May 1929 – Paul Lauterbur, an American chemist, and Nobel Prize Laureate, was born.

6 May 1949 – Maurice Maeterlinck, a Belgian playwright, poet, and essayist. and Nobel Prize Laureate died.

6 May 1967 – Zakir Husain became the 1st Muslim president of India.

6 May 2005 – Lashkar-e-Taiba was declared as a terrorist organization by United Nations.

6 May 2010 – Ajmal Kasab was sentenced to death for the 26/11 attack in Mumbai.

6 May 2015 Novera Ahmed, a Bangladeshi sculptor and painter, died.
