International Day of Sport for Development and Peace

International Day Sport for Development and Peace Day (IDSDP) is observed worldwide on April 6. UN General Assembly declared 6 April International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP) to raise awareness of this potential. It represents the UN’s increasing recognition of how sport can advance human rights, as well as social and economic development.

International Day of Sport for Development and Peace 2023: Theme

“Scoring for People and the Planet” is the theme of the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace in 2023. This overarching theme allows IDSDP activities to broadly revolve around the impact and influence of sport on sustainable development and peace.

It offers tremendous potential for advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as well as for promoting peace and human rights by empowering women, girls, persons with disabilities, and other marginalized groups, as well as advancing health, sustainability, and education objectives.

International Day of Sport for Development and Peace: History

To raise awareness of this potential, 6 April was declared the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP) by the UN General Assembly. The adoption of this Day signifies the increasing recognition by the UN of the positive influence that sport can have on the advancement of human rights, and social and economic development.

In its Resolution (A/RES/67/296) establishing the Day. The UN General Assembly declared 6 April as the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace in August 2013.

International Day of Sport for Development and Peace: Significance

Sport and physical activity can be a cost-effective and meaningful tool to address a wide range of needs related to: education, health, social inclusion, youth development, gender equality, peace-building, and sustainable development.

Since 1894, the IOC’s mission has been to use sport to promote peace and development. At all levels, from casual practice to competitive sport, Pierre de Coubertin, the IOC’s founder, intended for Olympism to promote harmony among individuals and nations.
