Maria Mitchell was an American astronomer, born on August 1, 1818, on the island of Nantucket, Massachusetts. She came from a Quaker family that valued education, and her father, William Mitchell, was a dedicated amateur astronomer who taught her about the stars and celestial objects from a young age.
Maria Mitchell’s passion for astronomy led her to become the first American woman to work as a professional astronomer. In 1847, she discovered a new comet, which became known as “Miss Mitchell’s Comet.” This discovery earned her international recognition and a gold medal from the King of Denmark.
In 1865, Mitchell was appointed as a professor of astronomy at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York. She played a crucial role in shaping the curriculum and encouraging women to pursue scientific studies. Maria Mitchell passed away on June 28, 1889, in Lynn, Massachusetts, at the age of 70.
