Pulin Behari Das (24 January 1877 – 17 August 1949), a great freedom-lover and revolutionary. He founded a revolutionary organization called “Dhaka Anushilan Samiti” for the independence of India and carried out many revolutionary events. The University of Calcutta gives a special medal in his honor, named ‘Pulin Bihari Das Memorial Medal’. He was born on 24 January 1877 in Faridpur.

Karpoori Thakur (24 January 1924 – 17 February 1988), an Indian freedom fighter, teacher, politician, and former Chief Minister of Bihar. He was called a mass hero because of his Popularity. Karpoori Thakur was born on 24 January 1924 in Pitonjhia (Karpuri Village), Samastipur, Bihar.

Subhash Ghai, a famous producer-director of Hindi films. He is counted as one such filmmaker in Bollywood, who through his films has made a special recognition on the hearts of the audience as the second showman after Raj Kapoor. Hindi movies ‘Kalicharan’, ‘Vishwanath’, ‘Karz’, ‘Vidhata’, ‘Karma’, ‘Hero’, ‘Saudagar’, ‘Ram-Luckan’, ‘Taal’, ‘Khalnayak’, ‘Pardesh’ and ‘Aitraaz’ tells his own success story. He was born on 24 January 1945 in Nagpur, Maharashtra.

Death Anniversary

24 January in Indian history is observed as the death anniversary of the following personalities:

Homi Jehangir Bhabha (30 October 1909 – 24 January 1966), a prominent Indian scientist who conceived India’s nuclear power program. When he was 29 years old and had spent 13 years full of achievements in England. At that time ‘Cambridge University was considered the best place in the field of physics. When Shri Bhabha’s years were full of achievements in the field of research, he got the opportunity to return home. Shri Bhabha decided to work only by staying in his homeland India. He had the passion to bring a revolution in the field of science and technology in his country. He died on 24 January 1966.

Pandit Bhimsen Joshi (4 February 1922 – 24 January 2011), an important classical singer of the Kirana Gharana. He started singing at the age of 19 and continued to sing classical for seven decades. Bhimsen Joshi has made Karnataka proud. Earlier in the field of Indian music, M.S. Subbulakshmi, Ustad Bismillah Khan, Pandit Ravi Shankar, and Lata Mangeshkar have been awarded ‘Bharat Ratna’. The basis of his ability is his great musical practice. He was counted among the great singers of Hindustani classical music popular in the country and abroad. Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, who ushered in a new era in Hindustani classical music with his solo singing, was the sixth person in the world of art and culture to be awarded the country’s highest civilian award ‘Bharat Ratna’. Bhimsen Gururaj Joshi of ‘Kirana Gharana’ composed a wonderful rendition in his various ways of singing. When his son Srinivas Joshi told him about getting the country’s highest civilian award, Bhimsen Joshi said in Pune – “I accept this honor on behalf of all Hindustani classical singers who have given their lives to music.”  He died on 24 January 2011 in Pune, Maharashtra.

Chandrabali Pandey (25 April 1904 – 24 January 1958), dedicated to the promotion and protection of the Hindi language and literature. Apart from being the President of the Hindi Sahitya Sammelan, he was also the Chairman of the Nagari Pracharini Sabha. His ideas related to the Hindi Urdu problem and Sufi literature and philosophy are of historical importance. Pandey died on 24 January 1958.
