G. D. Naidu (23 March 1893 – 4 January 1974), an Indian inventor and engineer who is referred to as the “Edison of India”. G.D. Naidu was born at Kalangal, Coimbatore on 23 March 1893.

Nalini Bala Devi (23 March 1898 – 24 December 1977), a noted Indian writer and poet of Assamese literature. In 1957, She was honored with Padma Shri by the Government of India. In 1968, she was awarded Sahitya Akademi Award. She is the first woman Assamese poet to be awarded Padma Shri and the first lady to the chair of the Assam Sahitya Sabha. She was born on 23 March 1898 in Guwahati, Assam, British India.

Ram Manohar Lohia (23 March 1910 – 12 October 1967), an activist in the Indian independence movement and a socialist political leader. He won the Lok Sabha general election of 1967 from Kannauj (Lok Sabha constituency). He was born on 23 March 1910.

Subhadra Joshi (23 March 1919 – 30 October 2003), a noted Indian freedom activist, politician and parliamentarian from Indian National Congress. She took part in the 1942 Quit India movement, and later remained the president of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC). She was born on 23 March 1919 in Sialkot, Punjab, British India.

Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, an Indian billionaire entrepreneur. She is the chairperson and managing director of Biocon Limited, a biotechnology company based in Bangalore, India, and the former chairperson of the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore. She was named EY World Entrepreneur of The Year 2020. She was born on 23 March 1953 in Pune, Maharashtra, India.

Atul Satish Wassan, a former Indian cricketer. After retirement, he has become a cricket commentator. He played 4 Tests & 9 ODIs for India at the highest level, however, due to injuries his career was cut short & he shifted towards the Television industry hosting many cricket related shows. He was born on 23 March 1967 in Delhi, India

Smriti Zubin Irani, an Indian politician, former model, television actress, and producer. She is a Minister in the Union Cabinet of India. She is affiliated with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). She was born on 23 March 1976 in New Delhi, India.

Death Anniversary

23 March in Indian history is observed as the death anniversary of the following personalities:

Bhagat Singh, an Indian socialist revolutionary whose two acts of dramatic violence against the British in India and execution at age 23 made him a folk hero of the Indian independence movement. He was executed on 23 March 1931.

Sukhdev Thapar (15 May 1907 – 23 March 1931), an Indian revolutionary. A senior member of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association, he participated in several actions alongside Bhagat Singh and Shivaram Rajguru and was hanged by the British authorities on 23 March 1931 at the age of 23.

Shivaram Hari Rajguru (24 August 1908 – 23 March 1931), an Indian revolutionary. He also fought for the independence of India and on 23 March 1931, he was hanged by the British government along with Bhagat Singh and Sukhdev Thapar.

Udham Singh Kular (4 August 1928 – 23 March 2000), an Indian hockey player. He had played 1952 Summer Olympics Helsinki, 1956 Summer Olympics Melbourne, 1960 Summer Olympics Rome and 1964 Summer Olympics Tokyo as a member of the Indian Hockey team and won three gold and a silver medal (set an Olympic record for a player in the Olympic Field Hockey competition). He was also awarded the Arjuna Award by the Indian Government. He is known to be one of the finest Hockey players India has ever produced. He died on 23 March 2000 in Jalandhar, Punjab, India
