OV Digital Desk

World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) is celebrated on the 21st of March every year. It is a global awareness day that aims to promote understanding, acceptance, and inclusion of people with Down syndrome. The date was chosen to represent the 3rd copy of the 21st chromosome that causes Down syndrome.

About Down Syndrome

Down syndrome is a genetic condition that occurs when there is a full or partial extra copy of chromosome 21. It affects one in every 700 births worldwide, making it the most common chromosomal disorder. People with Down syndrome typically have physical and intellectual disabilities, but their abilities and strengths vary greatly. They may also have an increased risk for certain health conditions such as congenital heart defects, hearing loss, and thyroid problems.

World Down Syndrome Day 2023: Theme
The message of “With Us Not for Us”

Human rights-based approaches to a disability must include the message “With Us Not for Us”. People with disabilities are no longer treated as objects of charity, deserving of pity, and reliant on others for support under the outdated charity model. People with disabilities have the right to be treated fairly and have the same opportunities as everyone else, working WITH others to improve their lives.

World Down Syndrome Day: History

The United Nations has recognized World Down Syndrome Day since 2011, highlighting the importance of inclusion and recognizing the contributions that people with Down syndrome make to society. The UN has also emphasized the need to promote their rights and ensure that they have equal opportunities in all aspects of life.
