Birth Anniversary

14 June in Indian history is celebrated as the birth anniversary of the following personalities:

Suraiya Jamal Sheikh (15 June 1929 – 31 January 2004), a popular actress and singer in Indian Cinema. She was active from 1936 to 1963 and was the most celebrated actress between the mid-to-late 1940s before she was surpassed in fame by Madhubala and Nargis. She acted in more than 60 movies and sang more than 300 songs in her career. Suraiya made her first appearance as a child artist with the film Madame Fashion (1936). In 1954, her film Mirza Ghalib was awarded the President’s gold medal for the Best Feature Film of 1954 during the 2nd National Film Awards, with the then Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, remarking at the ceremony that she had brought Mirza Ghalib to life. In 1996, Suraiya was awarded the Screen Lifetime Achievement Award. She was born on 15 June 1929 in Karachi, British India.

Kisan Baburao Hazare, popularly known as Anna Hazare, an Indian social activist who led movements to promote rural development, increase government transparency, and investigate and punish corruption in public life. Hazare also contributed to the development and structuring of Ralegan Siddhi, a village in Parner taluka of Ahmednagar district, Maharashtra, India. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan—the third-highest civilian award—by the Government of India in 1992 for his efforts in establishing this village as a model for others. He was born on 15 June 1937 in Bombay Province, British India.

Lakshmi Niwas Mittal, an Indian steel magnate. He is the Executive Chairman of ArcelorMittal, the world’s largest steelmaking company. In 2005, Forbes ranked Mittal as the third-richest person in the world, making him the first Indian citizen to be ranked in the top ten in the publication’s annual list of the world’s richest people. He was honoured with Padma Vibhushan in 2008. He was born on 15 June 1950 in Rajasthan, India.

Satya Pal Jain, the Additional Solicitor General of India. He is a Member of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He was elected Member of Parliament from Chandigarh in 1996 (11th Lok Sabha) and 1998 (12th Lok Sabha). He is a practising Senior Advocate in the Supreme Court of India and the Punjab and Haryana High Court at Chandigarh. He was born on 15 June 1952 in Kharar, Punjab.

Death Anniversary

15 June in Indian history is observed as the death anniversary of the following personalities:

Ulloor S. Parameswara Iyer (6 June 1877 – 15 June 1949), an Indian poet of Malayalam literature and a historian. The Government of Kerala established Mahakavi Ulloor Memorial Library and Research Centre in 1956, to honour the memory of the poet. He died on 15 June 1949.

Srirangam Srinivasa Rao (30 April 1910 – 15 June 1983), an Indian poet and lyricist who is known for his works in Telugu literature and films. Noted for his anthology Maha Prasthanam. He was also the recipient of the National Film Award, a Nandi Award and a Sahitya Akademi Award.
