Birth Anniversary

14 March in Indian history is celebrated as the birth anniversary of the following personalities:

Gurmukh Nihal Singh, an educationist, the first Governor of Rajasthan and second Chief Minister of Delhi from 1955 to 1956. He was affiliated with Indian National Congress (INC). He was the successor of Chaudhary Brahm Prakash and assumed office in 1955 just for one year, after the States Reorganisation Act, 1956 was passed which made Delhi a Union Territory. He was born on 14 March 1895.

Sankaran Kutty Kunjiraman Pottekkatt (14 March 1913 – 6 August 1982), an Indian writer of Malayalam literature and a politician. He was a recipient of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award, Sahitya Akademi Award, and the Jnanpith Award for his literary works. His works have been translated into English, Italian, Russian, German and Czech, besides all major Indian languages. He was born on 14 March 1913 in Calicut, British India.

Farida Jalal, an Indian actress. Jalal acted in over 200 films in the Hindi, Telugu, and Tamil film industries. She has received numerous accolades: Four Filmfare Awards and two Bengal Film Journalists Association Awards. Farida Jalal was born on 14 March 1949 in New Delhi India.

Vijay Yadav, a former cricketer. A wicketkeeper and an aggressive lower-order batsman, Yadav played 19 One Day Internationals from 1992 to 1994 and appeared once for India in Test cricket. He was born on 14 March 1967 in Gonda, Uttar Pradesh, India.

Mohammed Aamir Hussain Khan, an Indian actor, director, filmmaker, and television talk show host. He is commonly known as Aamir Khan. Khan has established himself as one of the most popular and influential actors of Indian cinema. He was honored by the Government of India with the Padma Shri in 2003 and the Padma Bhushan in 2010. For years, he has been regularly listed as one among “The 500 Most Influential Muslims of the world”. He was born on 14 March 1965 in Bombay, India.

Irom Chanu Sharmila, a civil rights activist, political activist, and poet from the Indian state of Manipur. She is also known as “Iron Lady of Manipur“. She began a hunger strike in favor of abolishing the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 that applies to the seven states and grants security forces the power to search properties without a warrant and to arrest people. In 2010, she won a lifetime achievement award from the Asian Human Rights Commission. In 2013, Amnesty International declared her a Prisoner of conscience and said she “is being held solely for a peaceful expression of her beliefs. She was born on 14 March 1972 in Manipur, India.

Death Anniversary

14 March in Indian history is observed as the death anniversary of the following personalities:

Jai Narayan Vyas (18 February 1899 – 14 March 1963), an Indian politician and the third chief minister of the State of Rajasthan. He became chief minister of Rajasthan twice, the first time from 26 April 1951 to 3 March 1952 and a second time from 1 November 1952 to 12 November 1954. He was also a member of the Rajya Sabha from 20 April 1957 to 2 April 1960 and from 3 April 1960 till his death.  He was affiliated with Indian National Congress (INC) party. He died on 14 March 1963 at an age of 64.

Krishna “Dada” Kondke (8 August 1932 – 14 March 1998) was an Indian actor and film producer. He was one of the most renowned personalities in the Marathi film industry, famous for his double entendre dialogues in movies. He died on 14 March 1998.

14 March 1854 – Paul Ehrlich a German physician, scientist, and Nobel Prize Laureate, was born.

14 March 1879Albert Einstein was born, the son of a Jewish electrical engineer in Ulm, Germany. Einstein’s theories of special and general relativity drastically altered man’s view of the universe and his work in particle and energy theory helped make possible quantum mechanics and, ultimately, the atomic bomb.

14 March 1883Karl Marx, a great journalist, chief editor, writer, and social worker, died in London at an age of 64.

14 March 1911 Akira Yoshizawa a Japanese origamist, considered to be the grandmaster of origami, was born.

14 March 1914 – Carolina Maria de Jesus, a Brazilian outskirts memorialist, was born.

14 March 1928 Felix Rodriguez de la Fuente a Spanish naturalist and broadcaster, was born.

14th March 1931 – The first sound film of India Alam Ara was released. It was directed by Ardeshir Irani. The film was so popular that they actually had to get the police to control the crowd along with the theatre. The film ran house full for more than 8 weeks after its release. Sadly, there are no more known copies of the movies that have survived.

14 March 1939 – Slovakia declares independence.

14 March 1980 –  Felix Rodriguez de la Fuente, a Spanish naturalist and broadcaster, died.

14 March 1995 Ed Roberts, the first wheelchair user to attend the University of California, Berkeley, died.

14 March 1995 – William Alfred Fowler an American nuclear physicist, astrophysicist, and Nobel Prize Laureate, died.

14 March 2018 Stephen Hawking, a renowned theoretical physicist, died.

March 14 is also observed as Pi Day is an annual celebration of the mathematical constant π (pi). UNESCO’s 40th General Conference decided Pi Day as the International Day of Mathematics in November 2019.
