Gurmukh Nihal Singh, an educationist, the first Governor of Rajasthan and second Chief Minister of Delhi from 1955 to 1956. He was affiliated with Indian National Congress (INC). He was the successor of Chaudhary Brahm Prakash and assumed office in 1955 just for one year, after the States Reorganisation Act, 1956 was passed which made Delhi a Union Territory. He was born on 14 March 1895.
Sankaran Kutty Kunjiraman Pottekkatt (14 March 1913 – 6 August 1982), an Indian writer of Malayalam literature and a politician. He was a recipient of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award, Sahitya Akademi Award, and the Jnanpith Award for his literary works. His works have been translated into English, Italian, Russian, German and Czech, besides all major Indian languages. He was born on 14 March 1913 in Calicut, British India.
Farida Jalal, an Indian actress. Jalal acted in over 200 films in the Hindi, Telugu, and Tamil film industries. She has received numerous accolades: Four Filmfare Awards and two Bengal Film Journalists Association Awards. Farida Jalal was born on 14 March 1949 in New Delhi India.

Irom Chanu Sharmila, a civil rights activist, political activist, and poet from the Indian state of Manipur. She is also known as “Iron Lady of Manipur“. She began a hunger strike in favor of abolishing the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 that applies to the seven states and grants security forces the power to search properties without a warrant and to arrest people. In 2010, she won a lifetime achievement award from the Asian Human Rights Commission. In 2013, Amnesty International declared her a Prisoner of conscience and said she “is being held solely for a peaceful expression of her beliefs. She was born on 14 March 1972 in Manipur, India.

Death Anniversary

Jai Narayan Vyas (18 February 1899 – 14 March 1963), an Indian politician and the third chief minister of the State of Rajasthan. He became chief minister of Rajasthan twice, the first time from 26 April 1951 to 3 March 1952 and a second time from 1 November 1952 to 12 November 1954. He was also a member of the Rajya Sabha from 20 April 1957 to 2 April 1960 and from 3 April 1960 till his death. He was affiliated with Indian National Congress (INC) party. He died on 14 March 1963 at an age of 64.
Krishna “Dada” Kondke (8 August 1932 – 14 March 1998) was an Indian actor and film producer. He was one of the most renowned personalities in the Marathi film industry, famous for his double entendre dialogues in movies. He died on 14 March 1998.

14th March 1931 – The first sound film of India Alam Ara was released. It was directed by Ardeshir Irani. The film was so popular that they actually had to get the police to control the crowd along with the theatre. The film ran house full for more than 8 weeks after its release. Sadly, there are no more known copies of the movies that have survived.
